Check rates into Boston. May be worth the extra bit of driving.

SAnParis,

Thanks for this great thread - my favorite subject - seafood! Lobster, fried clams. Must come visit Maine...I must, I must.

I thought the "unwritten rule" was not to eat lobster in a month that didn't have an R in it.

I think that is oysters, not lobster.

That is oysters, stars is right. After starting my research I am now befuddled by all the options. Isle de Haut (sp ?) is it worth the effort & $ ? Other favorite isles ? I'm thinking we'd like a cottage for the week & we'll stay maybe one other place in whatever is available...Fave cottages (preferably on the Coast, or maybe a Lake).

Any help ?

Hi Brutforce, I think it's Isle au Haut, and people really love it. I've never been, so I can't really speak about it. Personally I love the Acadia/Bar Harbor region, but that can get crowded in the summer. You might visit a site like visitmaine.com to research the different areas. They also have some cottages/condos to rent on that site. You can also find places to rent on the various sights like viro.com, (I think that's right.) Even craig's list might have some cottages listed. Good Luck!

I don't think we've visited many isles. Last summer we did a day trip to Monhegan. It might have been nicer to do an overnight so we could have hiked longer trails. We took a picnic lunch to enjoy as we sat on a cliff. It really depends on your style of travel. I go into overdrive and want to keep going, looking for what's over the next hill. Last year we stayed in Wiscasset (camped) which was a great "central" location for explorations. You might consider splitting your time between two areas of Maine. From Wiscasset, Bar Harbor is really too far for a day trip. When we stayed in Searsport we could have done Bar Harbor as a day trip (we had spent a weekend on Mt Desert prior to that). The mid-coast area is definitely are favorite. Southern Maine is more popular for weekenders, has sandy beaches and more congestion/shops. Spent a weekend in Bangor once where we enjoyed the Cole Transportation Museum and a logging competition weekend at Leonard Mills. We saw some interesting cottages in the Bay Path area. Fairly convenient to Rt 1 but off in its own area. Wouldn't know it was there if you didn't look for it. Like a Victorian cottage colony. It's hard to decide!

As stated prior, we'll likely rent a house for a week (hopefully in a great location) & spend another night or two on one of the isles. Everything is, of course, subject to change several times between now & then.
