Lobster Rolls at Maine McDonald's and any other surprises?
I was so surprised during my visit to Maine to find Lobster Rolls on the menu at McDonald's.
Any other expereinces with unique regional menu items at chain restaurants? |
My surprise came when my hubby actually ordered one of those McD's lobstah rolls. For $5, he definitely got what he paid for...the amazing part is that he lived to tell about it. YUCK.
|
Let me put it this way, Red Lobster did not last in Concord NH. I think the one in Portsmouth closed as well. The DeAngelo's sub chain has lobster subs too but they aren't very good. One of our favorite summer activities is the hunt for the best lobstah roll and/or onion rings. Our second favorite activity is the hunt for the best homemade ice cream. Last summer I thought we were going to have to put the car into 4 wheel drive before we found the way-off-the-beaten path creamery. We also saw two bears.
BTW please support the local independent restauranteurs. As it is, the best pie bakers at the grange suppah are starting to 'hang up their aprons'. Has anyone else noticed it's almost impossible to find a good hamburger nowadays? |
Those lobster rolls at New England McDonald's are only seasonal. And dare I admit it... I like them! But, alas, I also like the lobster bisque at D'Angelos. I actually served that at a dinner party to rave reviews. But mums the word!
|
We thought those McD lobster rolls were pretty darned good! Sure wish you could have such an item on the menu in the midwest.....
|
DH also had to try the McDonald's lobster roll. Maybe we hit it on a bad day, but YUCK! We ate a LOT of lobster rolls on that trip, and that was the only bad one.
|
I was delighted when I ordered some kind of combo breakfast at McDonald's in Waikiki and got wonderful fresh pineapple with my meal.
Is that what you mean as regional starrsville? |
In New Mexico, the green things on the McDonalds hamburgers were not pickles - this almost traumatized my kids.
|
That is what I meant by regional, iceeu2.
wsoxrebel, I would NOT have been happy with that green surprise. And although we supported the local independents, I DID enjoy the Mickey D's lobster roll too! |
McD's in Quebec and Ontario (maybe elsewhere) has fries with cheese curds and gravy. Everytime I try to say the name I end of saying the word for a loose woman in Qubecois... uh hum...
It's poutine I think. |
In California, we have the McVege which is a vege burger and we also have the fruit & walnut salad. I can't seem to find either item on the east coast. I ordered a McVege in Wisconsin once and they thought I was nuts!!
|
Yes...I too had the fries with the cheese curds and gravy in Quebec - TxtravelPro. It was quite good.

DFrost, re hamgurgers:
Have you been to Wild Willy's on Rt. 1 in York, ME?!! I think you'd be very happy! They've also just opened another location in southern NH. Someone told me Manchester, but I think it must be more towards Nashua, as I haven't come across it yet. How funny about the poutine in Quebec! I never realized there were all these regional adjustments at McDs. I thought everyplace got the lobster roll in the summer. |
The oyster po' boys at the Georgia Coast McD's are not bad. Actually one of the better $3 sandwiches I've had.
|
Here in Hawai`i, you can order your breakfast eggs served with a side of rice and spam (or portugese sausage). _Very_ local!
|
At some McDonald's on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, crab cakes are available. Probably lousy; I wouldn't eat them.
|
Oyster po'boys in Ga?! I had no idea. I'll give 'em a try.
LA_Fadeaway - I got strange looks in a McD's in California when I ordered a bacon biscuit. No biscuits in CA - at least at that time (it has been quite a few years ago). |
Hmm, and here in the Midwest all we get is the McRib! I'd at least try a po boy or lobster roll!
|
Thanks dreamer2. We have to do more excursions to Maine as soon as the weather gets better.
|
Every time I take a trip outside my native U.S.A., as a joke I have my photo taken in front of a local McDonalds. I rarely have trouble finding one. I thus see a lot of local variety. The tops was at the McD's in Belgium, where you can get beer with your meal.
