Living in Maui? (Help)

We are thinking about selling the house and moving to Maui. Can anyone give us any information on the cost of living in Maui? Is it very expensive? How's the job market? What are the average salaries? Does Maui offer nice/reasonable apartments? What is the average price to rent an apartment or condo? Please advise?

I would think long and hard before up and moving to Hawaii! I used to live on the Big Island (went to college at UH-Hilo) and met a number of people who did what you're talking about doing and most, not all, were less than thrilled with their decision(s). I am not trying to discourage you but think you ought to really check it out. If you have jobs such as nurse or doctor you'll do fine. Otherwise, expect to find it difficult to find good paying positions. They don't call us Haole's (sp?) for nothing!!

Thanks for the advice David. What would you say are the negatives?? Unfortunately, we are not in the medical profession.

Lilly -

The cost of living is much higher in Maui, and what you get for your money is much less than on the Mainland. You'd be surprised. I would think twice about up and moving to Maui. The economy in Hawaii is not as strong as on the Mainland. The only people who can afford to buy or live in nice homes are either doctors, lawyers, rich business people, or people whose families have lived in Hawaii for a long time (and therefore have property in the family). You haven't specified what kind of job you would be looking for, or how big an apartment you would need.

Better do some research before you give up everything just to move to paradise. Go to www.hawaii.com and check out the various links at the bottom--these should show a bit more statistics about living & working in Hawaii.

Like David, I'm not trying to discourage you, but the cost of living is pretty expensive. We pay a lot for produce because we live on a chain of islands in the middle of the Pacific, therefore shipping charges are incurred.

To see how much your home would be worth in Hawaii, go to www.coldwellbanker.com and click on their Information Booth, then on their Home Price Comparison Index. It's a fun little calculator.
