living in Denver
My family and I are going to be visiting in May for Cinco de Mayo. This will be the first time to visit and we are looking to move to Denver. Any info someone can give on living in Denver, things to do and see would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

Hi Sarah - If you're thinking about moving to Denver, you might want to check out Dreamlofts.com. This website has listings for both rental and for sale lofts in the Denver market. Lofts are a very popular housing style in Denver and offer an opportunity to enjoy a urban lifestyle. Good luck with your trip!

Can you be more specific about what your want to know? The people in Denver tend to live an active lifestyle doing biking, hiking, skiing, soccer, frisbee, and what ever other outdoor activity you can think of. We have lots of sun. Probably about 300 days a year. May is a nice time to visit, but it's a little early to enjoy spring in the mountains.

Hope you're earning plenty of money, the average cost of a home in Denver is $266,000. Economy may be slowing but housing prices are still very high.

Although Denver does have a higher cost of living, it's a great place! It really depends on what you like to do but Denver has a lot of activites for everyone. What are you interested in? Nightlife, historical, sightseeing, outdoor activities?

What I was hoping to find out is if Denver is a 'friendly' city and is it a good place to raise children. I'm living in Abilene,TX right now and it is too small and not enough to do. Would like to go camping and fishing at least once a month and learn how to do more winter outdoor activities. Thanks to everyone that has posted! :)

I have lived in Denver for 13 years. People are very casual and open minded. I grew up in a very conservative small town and really enjoy that people in Denver embrace diverisity.
Housing is expensive for first time buyers ($250,000 for and average 3 bedroom house). If you have money from the sale of an exsisting house, you will be better off. The economy has slowed down a lot, so make sure you have a job waiting. School districts very greatly in class size and quality, so be sure to do your homework before buying a house. Higher taxes don't always mean better schools. I live in Jefferson county and elementary schools in our area have classes as large as 30 kids per teacher.
We love the mountains. Day trips are fun, but I-70 backs up during summer travel volume. If you enjoy camping, plan ahead a few weeks and make reservations. It is difficult to just drive up and find a campground. Ymca Snow Mountain Ranch (ymcarockies.org) in Granby, CO rents campsites with electricity and water. You and use all the facilities on the grounds (pool, mini golf, basketball, hiking, fishing, rollerskating). For a fee, horse back riding, crafts, bike rental or cross country skiing.
If you are a sports fan we have major league baseball, football, hockey, and basketball. If you enjoy theatre, check out the Denver Center. Local productions, touring Broadway shows, symphony, and ballet. Museum of Nature and Science is great for the whole family. Denver.org has coupons for local attractions.
I've rambled enough. Enjoy your stay.

Sarah - If you like the outdoors, there's plenty to do in the Denver area! People in Denver, in general, tend to be more outdoorsy and active. We get lots of sunshine and beautiful, mild days, even in the middle of the winter. The lifestyle (I come from the midwest & Chicago) is more laid-back and relaxed.

A good place to raise kids? Sure, for the reasons listed above. On the down side, there is not much ethnic diversity, and there's a large element of more conservative folks, though there's also the earthy-crunchy environmental crowd. So, depending on your preferences, that could be good or bad.

The drive up to the mountains gets worse every year, but if you can, for example, drive up to your campsite on Friday night, and return after dark Sunday night, it's not too bad. I love being able to hike in the mountains every weekend, if I want to! And of course there are all those ski resorts during the winter! They offer lots of special rates to locals to encourage them to hit the slopes.
