List your favorite South Shore of Lake Tahoe restaurants here!

Any price range, any cuisine. Little-known places would be a big help, since we will be there during the crazy New Year's week. I would like a list of Fodorite favorites to take with me.

We would also be willing to travel out of the immediate So. Shore area for something great.

Thanks, all.

Hi lvk! We like the Dory's Oar, next to the Inn by the Lake. They have a nice fine dining restaurant and also a pub-type place with great fish and chips for a more casual meal. Have fun in Tahoe! ***kim*** ((l))

evans at the y is very good but may be hard to get into. womack's right on 50 before stateline has really good southern bbq. naked fish is great for sushi. chart house, although a chain, is very good and a beautiful view. the beacon at camp richardson is good, but more of a summer place along with the dinner place at tahoe keys. cabo wabo inside harveys is really fun. if i think of more i'll let you know

ok i just thought of more. for breakfast- red hut (there's two locations) and heidi's. there's a really good hawaiian place (fancy- not plate lunch) in the new marriot complex and a wolfgang puck that was good. also riva grill has beautiful views and good for a snack in the bar. fresh ketch is the name of the place at tahoe keys- just remembered

Hi Ivk,

If you are driveing up to Incline Village, our favorite place to dine is the Lone Eagle Grill, on the lake, at the Hyatt Resort where we have a Timeshare. We eat there several times over the July 4th holiday week, and part of the charm is watching the sunset or having a cocktail by the outdoor firepit. I suggest you might have lunch or appetizers there to take in the lovely view of the snow on the mountains since you will be there in the winter and it would be dark at dinner. Menu is interesting, and the wine list the best we have found in Tahoe. They have a large great room for cocktails and a huge fireplace which is cozy.

Hoss Hoggs, 2543 Hwy 50 at Sierra Blvd, S. Lake Tahoe is a little hole in the wall kind of place but it has THE BEST RIBS! (Pork and Beef!)

The Cantina on Emerald Bay Road has great Mexican food:

Truckee used to have a great little gourmet restaurant in a small house. Drove over there one night from Incline a loooong time ago (25+ years). At that time the owner was the fellow who owned Charles in SF. It was a restaurant who wouldn't let you in or take reservations without a referral; you couldn't just walk in. No problem in Truckee-owner/chef even came over & talked to us for awhile.

It's not downtown but near the RR. Maybe someone else on this board has more current info.

Hugos at the Hyatt used to be great but I think that's also long gone.

Have fun.

The Greenhouse Restaurant at the Tahoe Tropicana. Upscale cuisine, casual atmosphere, delicious!!!!

On a trip with a budget-conscious group, we booked a package deal at the Tahoe Tropicana that included meals, so we ate there almost every night and got to sample a lot of their cuisine. I couldn't get over how good it was - when we - somewhat reluctantly - booked here, I figured we'd ditch half the meals - we didn't they were too good!!!! You can check out the menu at http://www.tahoetropicana.com/ (Oh, I should mention, sometimes, not always, the service was a little slow...didn't matter to us, for dinner we were exhausted from skiing & in no hurry.)

The hotel, as you might notice from the pictures, is one of those older relics, in almost every regard. Yes, a bit of a dive! One thing I will give them, though, the room was very clean, although definitely dated and run-down. It's really a contrast to have such a fabulous restaurant with such a sad little old motel.

Fire and Ice in South Lake Tahoe is a Mongolian-style barbecue place that's kind of fun. Tip: load up on meat first, then add vegetables. Harrah's buffet is pretty good, also.

Little-known? Tough to say that, if a person reads about it on Fodor's dot com. I'll give up two favorites:

Thai Orchid on 50/Stateline.

Riva on Ski Run Blvd.

Thanks all. (Hi MBNancy!)

Muffin_eater: I promise not to tell anyone about your two gems ;).

Just FYI for anyone traveling to Tahoe, I just stumbled across a Moon Handbook dedicated to the Tahoe area. The title is "TAHOE". It has over 600 pages and seems to be very comprehensive. I'm looking forward to digging into the details.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Tahoe ski trip at the last minute last year. We're trying again for New Year's week this year

I'm topping this to get any updates or new suggestions.

Thanks!

Wow I didn't even see this last year!!!

Evans is located in a little cottage near Camp Richardson. Most wonderful food and service. Make reservations.

Cafe Fiore is super romantic with only 7 tables inside. Food was wonderful. Quite intimate.

Had a wonderful meal at the Greenhouse in an odd setting inside the Topicana.

Riva Grill at the marina.

Travel to Carnelian Bay to Garwoods if nice weather is expected otherwise might be too scary with ice and snow to drive there and back.

Kalanis behind the Marriott Grand.

For mexican food The Cantina. Used to be Tres Hermanos. Fun place north of the Y on the right.

We were at South Lake Tahoe last weekend. Had a nice dinner at Fridays at Harrahs. Very good food and nice view of the lights, etc. at South Shore. We had lunch the next day at The Riva Grill. We have eaten here many times and it seems to be consistantly good, service and food. Also, many friends rave about Evans.
Have fun.

Hi Ivk,

Where are you staying this year, a hotel or condo?

Last summer we went to see a movie at the Horizon Casino. When we came out of the theater we walked by Josh's Restaurant, (the fine dining place in the hotel) where they advertised nightly Lobster Dinners at a $19.95 price. It was actually very good. My husband had a thick juicy steak and enjoyed his dinner very much. We were dressed very casual, as were others.

we really like evans and riva grill also. there's a funky bbq place, womacks, right across state line that's pretty good. and right at state line there's naked sushi which is good and a taqueria right there in a strip mall that i can't think of the name of but good. there's also a burger place at the Y going towards emerald bay- looks like an old style place where you walk up and order that we liked. also, beacon grill at camp richardson (or i think that's the name) has good food, good cocktails and beautiful view. sorry i can't think of the name of anywhere- too many cold pills :(

The Sage Room at Harvey's is great for a steak dinner. Authentic Old Tahoe decor ( think 60's casino) waiters in black tie, martini bar......you can almost hear Dean Martin. We always eat there when we visit Tahoe. Everyone just loves it.

Riva Grill is also very consistent.

bgsnmky,

I see you have bookmarked this thread for 2007. I'm sorry to say that "Hoss Hoggs, 2543 Hwy 50 at Sierra Blvd, S. Lake Tahoe is a little hole in the wall kind of place but it has THE BEST RIBS! (Pork and Beef!)" Has gone out of business! :`(

What a shock when we went out of our way on the way home from Utah last October to have a our anniversary dinner there! :-<

It's now a Thai Restaurant.
