Lincoln Tunnel to Route 80?

Coming out of the Lincoln tunnel I need to get to route 80. It looks like I can take route 3 to route 46 to route 80 OR drop south on 95 to 280 to 80. Which one is better in terms of ease and speed. I need to travel a good distance across Penn. and I want to get on 80 ASAP

depending on what time of day...but i recommend 3 to 46 to 80

I hope to heading out of NYC around 3PM. If that makes a difference?

I would avoid 46 because of the construction. 280 to 80 would be a better bet.

I will be coming through in mid-June. Will 46 still be under construction?

take 95 to 80

McSmith May 20th, 2003 07:59 AM

Definately take 95 north for about 5 miles to 80. There is RARELY any traffic on this section of 95, but there is often traffic on 280 and 3/46.

I would recommend 495 to 95 South to 280 West to 80 West.

No need to travel north only to ultimately head back south.

It all depends on traffic conditions. On paper, Rt 280 to 80 is the better bet, but if there's traffic on 280, then you'd be better off taking the T'Pike north to 80. Listen to the radio that day (1010AM, 880AM, etc.).

Here is my 2 cents...

You don't need to take 46 West all the way to 80 and fight the traffic around Willowbrook Mall. I would actually take 3W to 46W. As soon as I enter 46W, I would exit and make a U-Turn for 46E (on Valley Road) and head 46E to 20N. There will be signs for Route 80.

46 is a "local" (with some traffic lights) road and not really congested. I just drove that way a few days back - there is no construction. Plus, I would avoid this crazy construction on 80 around Hackensack.

All the advice is good, but depending where you are coming from in Manhattan, I might not bother with the Lincoln Tunnel at all. The easiest route (and probably the fastest, all highway) would be to take the Westside Highway up to the George Washington Bridge, cross the span and get in the local lanes of 95 to Route 80, easy as pie, no working around the Route 3/46 stuff or 280 to 80. 280 can be especially painful at around rush hour, esp at the Stickle(sp?)draw bridge in Newark.
Also, if you leave just 30 minutes earlier (between 2-2:30pm), it can make all the difference in the world.
