Likelihood of getting seasick on a submarine?

We're thinking about doing the Maui Atlantis submarine dive. Dh and I would be fine with it, but our 11-year-old tends to get motion sickness. None of us have ever been in a submarine. Would it be a choppy ride?

My husband gets motion sick, and he didn't have a problem on the semi-submersible in Alaska.

Not a chance. We did the Maui trip and it was like sitting in your living room...except for the fish.

No motion at all. It is below the waves.

Not sure on the submersible, but I come from a long line of seasick boat/water lovers. We always keep candied ginger on hand. If she starts to feel sick, just have her suck on a piece- you let it dissolve on your tongue, rather than chewing it (if you chew it you're inclined to eat a ton and it has the same effect as hot sauce). It worked better for my mom (who can't even ride in the backseat of a car) than the patch did.

Thanks for the tip about the ginger, cocontom. I'm going to bring some along for the little guy just in case.

I think the submarine dive is going on our list of special things to do. I love the idea of sitting in my living room watching the beautiful fish go by. We're usually watching chipmunks, squirrels and the occasional raccoon. This will be a nice change.

Thanks again!

I guess anything is possible, but I can't imagine getting seasick on submarine. If you get seasick in the bathtub, then you might want to avoid a submarine. Just kidding. We did one in caribean and there was nothing to it. The only rocking will be when the sub is above water and that is only for a couple of minutes. I don't think it was overpriced because it must cost a lot to operate a sub, but I didn't think it was worth the amount we paid for what we saw. It was just ok, nothing that great in my opinion. If you don't snorkle or dive, this would be the way to go. With an 11 year old, I would go ziplining.

The launch going to and from the sub would be the more likely place to have any problems.

Is he OK with small spaces? I have problem with both seasickness and claustrophobia myself, so never took a chance with the submarine ride.

We haven't been on the submarine, but we've been on many semi-subs incluing the Reef Dancer in Maui. Never had a problem with motion sickness. DH sometimes gets it on smaller boats rides. I am more concerned with caustrophoia. That's why we like the semi-subs. We can go up top if it gets too much.

It is not the submarine ride itself, but the boat that you take to get onto the submarine that may make you sick.

Not sure of the procedures now, but I took the submarine ride (on Oahu) many years ago - we were shuttled out to the submarine on a boat and the seas were very choppy. I was rather nauseous once we got to the sub, but fine for the ride. Once I got back on the shuttle boat, I became nauseous again.

I'm still debating going, but if we do, I'm going to stock up on motion sickness meds and bring a few plastic bags just in case. (Sorry, I know it's gross.)

We haven't had any episodes of claustrophobia. That's a good thing!

Thanks for all the advice and tips!

Your son should be fine. We did one of those rides, and my Dh and Ds, who suffer motion sickness easily, did great. They didn't take any medication or wear the bands for it. Now if you ask me about the fishing boat excursion that Dh insisted we do, that's another story....

Oops, Martha, I realize your son could be a girl. Either way, the submarine was something we all enjoyed.

I'd rather be in a submarine than on a submarine.
I can't hold my breath that long anymore.

We enjoyed our submarine tour; there's very little motion to speak off since you're under the waves. I use Dramamine and Sea Bands if there's any doubt, but had no problems on the sub.

Oh! Bonine is also good- it doesn't knock you out like Dramamine. Our local CVS has it, but apparently it's usually uncommon.
