Lightning bugs thread

Can anyone else find this thread?

Saw my first tonight - memories of childhood. And the frog chorus was so loud I felt I was at a rock concert!

I've been thinking a lot about those fireflies! The whole thread brought back a lot of simple childhood memories. Now, don't get me started on frogs...I love them! Turtles too.

Well, when you have a full week of rain there seems to be more frogs than ever tonight!

Funny thing - Clark Howard, Atlanta's travel guru (and now syndicated) was airing from the Pacific NW this week. He's had sunshine all week in "rain country" and we've had cool, rainy weather for a full week!

Frog weather for sure! :-)

We found a frog in our bathroom last night. It was a pretty big one and we have NO idea how he got in the house. We watched him hop around awhile before we scooped him up in a shoe box and let him loose in the nearby creekbed. I thought for a minute about keeping him as a pet...

COOL!

Jocelyn--Buy your kids a "grow a frog". They are little kits, usually in more specialty toy stores, and you send away for the tadpole or froglet. We did this for our son and the tadpole grew into a full frog and we had him for 6 1/2 years! We even moved "froggie" cross country, lol!

I had a dear sweet lab who was a bit bored and would "adopt" frogs. She would gently pick one up in her mouth, dig out a small hole, put the frog in the shallow hole, place her paw over the frog and take a nap. Eventually, the frog would wiggle out and hop out. The lab would wake up, retrieve the frog gently in her mouth, place her back in the hole and the process would continue. So sweet! :-)

An Afternoon with Frog and Lab.

I have hundreds of tadpoles in the pond. Free "Grow a Frog" kit to Fodorites! :-)

mms, I've never seen those kits. Great idea!

starrsville, that's hilarious! I can only imagine how traumatized that little frog was, lol.

I would love a frog as a pet (for the kids, of course, ahem) and the "grow a frog" thing is a great idea--thanks mms. I may wait though. We have two aging dogs, and the timing for a new pet may be better after we have to say goodbye to an old one.

I was keeping up with that thread a bit too, after seeing lighteing bugs for the first time ever on our tiny island. I was in awe since I've only seen them in the northern US before.

On the topic of frogs, I am sitting here now listening to the tree frogs that I have heard every single night of my 12 years here. It's hard for me to sleep without them. :) Many of my guests find the sound annoying at times, but I can't think of a more lovely sound to fall asleep to.

We camped out in the backyard with the kids last weekend. The day after, I was yawning. DD asked me why I was tired, I said I had trouble sleeping because of all the noises outside that I wasn't accustomed to (thinking street noise). DD, who just turned five, said, "well, the crickets and frogs are music to me and I fell right to sleep!" :D

Growing up in LongIsland N.Y. I used to spend almost every summer night after dinner catching lightning bugs(fireflies) with my neighborhood friends. It seems like yesterday.

Speaking of frogs, where do they go in the wintertime? I have a small pond (New York) and I can never figure out what happens to the frogs come winter. Anybody know?

Starsville,

The thread was by "camcraw" (author) started on 5-26-05. Hope this helps you find it. I'm kind of new to posting and don't know how else to tell you to find it.

starrsville,
We've had lots of rain in Alabama, too, and our yard is full of frogs.

Your post reminded me that the old folks used to call a heavy rain a "frog strangler."

Ooops - Now I see that you found it last night. Ah well!

One of my cherished memories is of a trip to Ohio to visit my mother's cousins when I was maybe 3 or 4 years old. They lived in Cleveland but had a cottage that I think might have been near Cedar Point - ?? I remember being told one evening during that holiday that I had to go to bed early because I would be awakened during the night to see something wonderful. I was mystified, but complied. After dark, and I suppose it wasn't really all that late by adult standards but I was a very small child, they did wake me and carried me outdoors where I saw what seemed like millions of fireflies. I had never seen such a thing before - or since, for that matter. It was a magical night. What a nice gift from my parents!
