I leave on Tuesday for the Big Island. I often go during Ironman, as the bikes turn around in my tiny town of Hawi, and the whole area comes out to cheer them on, while drinking coffee from the Kohala Coffee Mill, and strolling over to the Farmer's Market under the Banyan Tree for fresh lilikoi muffins and papayas, 3 for $1.
I love driving into Kona and counting the bicyclists training on the road. I usually get 50 each way. While in Kona, strolling the sea wall, it is awesomely inspiring to observe all the incredible bodies of the athletes. The normally low-key town is bustling with excitement. I love to shop the half-off Ironman merchandise sale in the days after the race.
In the meantime, we will look for bikes to ride into town, and try to keep up our fitness routines by hiking the north Kohala coast, and Pololu Valley. As much music as we can find, and visits to our many favorite healthy restaurants, celebrating birthdays with friends, and doing lots of yard work and housework while training geckos, drinking coffee, reading and writing, will round off our too-short visit to paradise.
