Lenox,MA in the Fall
 

We'll be at the Birchwood Inn for 4 nights in mid October. So far I've planned for Edith Wharton's house and gardens. I've looked at some other gardens which all seem to close the week before we arrive. Any drives or daytrips to recommend?

Drive to the top of Mount Greylock...Panoramic views.
Williamstown/North Adams great for Mass Moca, the Clark, and Williams College.

There is a garden in Monterey that may still be open in October...think it is called achintilly (sp), but not sure. If you are up to it hike to the ruins of the old Berkshire Cottage on the property. The columns are still standing...thats about it. But the views are what they were 100 years ago. After 18 years in the Berkshires I found it last year. The drive through Tyringham valley is quite beautiful. Go all the way to Rte 23, go west on 23 to Great Barrington, then back to Lenox.

In mid-October, not much is left in bloom...except lots of chrysanthemums...

Chesterwood and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge are well worth a visit. The Sterling & Francine Clark in Williamstown is a gem.

Highly recommend a drive out the Mohawk Trail (Route 2) at least to hairpin curve.

For Mount Greylock, drive up from Route 7 to the summit; then, go down the back side into North Adams. Stop at Mass MoCA and Natural Bridge State Park, site of marble dam, a natural marble bridge, and former quarry.

In Pittsfield, there is the Hancock Shaker Village. Shakespeare and Company in Lenox has performances through October.
