Amy, just remembered the website escapemakers.com has all sorts of info on weekends in the northeast area. Also, not skiing, but closer than the Berkshires are Cold Spring & Rhinebeck with some nice Inns.
OO, I've never had to pay to stay in the area as I've always had friends with houses up there- have stayed in homes in Austerlitz,Chatham & Stockbridge. The Red Lion always looked so "shop worn" when I've eaten there, but in fairness, I've never seen the rooms. It always seems so crowded & busy-not a relaxing location.

Having spent a month in So Egremont a summer ago, I would pick the Red Lion for a place to stay, easy walking around in the evening, I like the atmosphere there.
We make a point of going to the Old Mill Inn whenever we are up in that area, the bread puddings for dessert will be enough to make me travel from my new home to Mass at least once a year!
In August there is a nice Craft fair between Lennox and the Rockwell Museum, I bought a great Chinese watercolor from the artist for very little, so many nice things and good prices!

The Old Mill Inn is only a restaurant to my knowledge.
Dan's place-he says-is in the middle of nowhere. Have you tried typing www.oldinn.com to get it? The site says they're in New Marlborough, Mass on Rte 57 so doesn't sound like the Inn at Stockbridge.
The Inn at Stockbridge does sound great in Rants & Raves here. That also led me to read about the Devonfield Inn in Lee, Mass which also sounds wonderful

Have you checked out the Berkshires section for hotels on Fodors?

The Inn I was speaking about, Inn at Gedney Farms, is about twenty miles from Lenox in New Marlborough. It's supposed to be nice, although it got a few rants in the hotel section here.
Whenever I go to an area I don't know, I go to Karen Browns website and check her lodging reccomendations.
I'm pretty familiar with many of the inns in "downtown" Lenox. Vilage Inn, Candelight, Gateways Inn. All would offer a nice enough room, but none exactly what I look for. I don't want to get into specifics because I haven't been there in a while and ownership changes frequently in Lenox.
Having said that, I'd probably go to the Brookfarm Inn. Not in the city center, but not that far.
