Lee Vining/Bridgeport - any recent tips?
 

We need to find a place to stay near/in Lee Vining.
Any favorite spot? Only see 2 spots listed in my AAA book. Not much!

Any decent places for dinner?
(this is supposed to be our main getaway in 6 mos. so altho' we don't *mind* things being pretty basic...eg. Best Western...

also, wouldn't mind a little 'escape' ...
even if that just be via our dinner.) ;-)

Also, does anyone know how long it takes to get to Bridgeport...and whether that might be a preferable place to stay?

Also meant to ask about June Lake area.
Just checked on MapQuest...
and it seems like that might be even closer than Bridgeport to Mono Lake area.

Granted, we're eventually heading north to Hope Valley, but maybe staying this little bit south of Mono Lake would be a good thing, if lodging options are much nicer there?

Also, we may just not be able to find lodging no matter what in Lee Vining, since there are so few choices. (just checked the Best Western & it's all booked) :-{

The Double Eagle Resort & Spa in June Lake is one of the nicer properties in the area. (about 20 minutes south of Lee Vining) There are several other properties in the June Lake Loop which are pretty "basic" BW, Days Inn motel-type properties.

As for restaurants, The Double Eagle has a good one, as does the Mono Inn at Mono Lake. For a real treat, you could drive about one hour south to the Restaurant at Convict Lake which always gets fabulous reviews.

Of course, about 45 minutes south of Lee Vining is the Mammoth Lakes resort area, which has many more options for dining and lodging.

Sorry, I can't help you with the Bridgeport area.

If you're just staying a night any place in Lee Vining, Bridgeport, or June Lakes should do. If these are all booked, there are plenty of rooms in Mammoth Lakes just 30 minutes south of Lee Vining on 395. These might be cheaper as well since October is an off month for the ski area. There are also many good restaurants in Mammoth Lakes. If you go down there and have the time, a trip over to Devil's Postpile and a hike out to Rainbow Falls are spectacular.

Good to know that Mammoth really isn't *that* far away.

I was thinkin' heading south would be too much, for such a short getaway...
but, it's good to know, it wouldn't add that much time, really. (and if it's what makes the difference in whether we can find lodging or not...
then, we shouldn't hesitate clearly)

Actually Mammoth Lakes is remarkably close to Lee Vining. Lots of lodging and restaurants. June Lake really doesn't have much of anything besides the Double Eagle. Most of the places to stay in Lee Vining are right on 395. There are more than 2 places. Though the speed limit is reduced the highway runs right down the middle of town.

The Bridgeport area is beautiful. The views of fields in the foreground with majestic mountains in the background is just ripe for a painting. Find the Devil's Backbone, it's what our kids do when we're there! "No, I saw it first!"
