Leaving Wed - Looking for C'Ville Restaurants
 

We are leaving Wed AM for C'Ville - Yeah!! Can't wait to see this area.

Anyone have suggestions for good casual restaurants that are resonably priced? We like Italian, American, Continental food. Not so much Mexican, Thai, Indian or other.

Burgers, pizza, lasagne, pasta, good sandwiches, etc. is what we are looking for and places we can wear jeans.

We are staying at the Inn at Court Square, and would love to be able to walk to wherever we eat.

What is C'ville?

C'ville is short for Charlottesville.

Go to Ivy Inn or C&O on the downtown mall (you can definitely walk to C&O). If you don't mind driving there's also Duner's in Ivy which is about a 20 minute drive from downtown.

Some restaurants we've found from reading - are any of these any good? We're looking for sandwiches/pizza/burgers for lunch and maybe Italian or Southern cuisine for dinner - again - nothing too expensive (over $15/each).

We had a great meal at the C&O. I'm not sure what your definition of "reasonably priced" is, but the entrees are probably $16-25. It is a tiny place, so make a reservation.

L'Aventure (never been)
Rococo's (not the biggest fan, but if you like Italian perhaps you should try it out).
Southern Culture (ok, can be bit hit or miss)
Starr Hill Restaurant and Brewery (don't recommend)
Bizou (never been)
Michael's Bistro and Taphouse (highly recommended)
OXO (never been)
Take It Away (very good for what it is)
Martha's Cafe (never been)
Bellair Market (highest recommendation, their sandwiches are amazing..not much of an atmosphere since after all its an Exxon station)
The Virginian (I like it, but mostly from a historical perspective)
Court Square Tavern (Good, but I think its closed for renovations).

I have only eaten at the following:
OXO - Pricey, tasty
Bellair Market - Awesome Sadnwiches but as noted, in an Exxon station (and not within walking distance of your hotel)
Rococo's - Meh, could take it or leave it

Also on the mall you might like:
Hamilton's - American, sorta pricey but very tasty.
Blue Light Grill- Seafood and (I think?) Raw BAr

I realize planning is half the fun but you also might try just walking on the mall to see what looks appealing; there are many restaurants and they'll have menus posted. And you can sit outside if the weather's cooperating (unlikely). You are within 2 blocks of the downtown mall where you are staying.

Also, there's a new hole in the wall (literally, a walk-up stand) on the other side of the mall called "The Flat" that has various crepes--could be good for lunch though I haven't tried it.
Splendora's on the mall has tasty gelato in an amazing variety of flavors, though it's pricey.

Just realized I sound like the world's biggest cheapskate (and I may well be ;-) ) mentioning that gelato is pricey--my point is that for the portion it seems high ut to me, worth it.

Ok, so now I feel like my comments on other restaurants being pricey has no meaning b/c there's no contect for a reader so here's the context:

OXO: Two course dinner prob. $50/pp b/c of entrees in $20-$30 range

Hamilton's : Entrees ranging prob. $16-$17

Blue Light - Entrees from $13-$20

First, that's "context" not contect.
Second, For Hamilton's that should read "$16-$27"

OK, I'm done. Really. =-)

Gelato - yeah! I'll pay anything for good gelato (within reason) - it's hard to get around here.

"Reasonable" for me means $8-$15/pp lunch, $15-$25/pp dinner.

Yes, good not to have everything planned, but also good to know someplace that looks good, menu looks good has terrible food or service. I hate wasting $$.

Mmmm went to grad school in Cville...good food everywhere! Lots of good recs listed but also Mellow Mushroom has great pizza (on the Corner), Cafe Europa and Littlejohn's have good sandwhiches (Littlejohn's is also open late late night). Also I highly recommend the Bluebird Cafe, really good and good for dinner too! Mono Loco also has great burritos! Mexican with flair I guess it would be :)


The Corner area or main drag along the campus has lots of good places and quick eats, but the downtown "mall" area mentioned is a great place to wander and lots of good nicer restaurants. There's a brewery (not Starr Hill)....can't remember the name, 5th street maybe that was good and laid back too. Everything is good in Cville, you'll find plenty!

Also, can't remember when they start but on Friday's at the end of the outdoor mall they have "Friday's after 5" with bands, great place to go relax early evening :)

There is a fun and hip tapas place in the Belmont neighborhood. Forgt the name but it's well worth a stop. Also Clifton Inn, just out of town, recently reopened after a lengthy fire-related closure. There chef was fabulous last time I was there.
