Leaving for NW MI this Sat.

Leaving PA this Sat. and heading for MI. Stopping 1st night in Dundee to hit Cabelas then then going to Sleeping Bear Dunes and points north.

From what I can tell, plenty of rooms available so I didn't make reservations. Is that a mistake? Thought we would just drive and go where the road takes us. With that way of travelling, it's hard to know when or where you will be. I copied many suggestions down from all of you for good lodging so we have some ideas where to stay when we stop. Any favorite resturants we shouldn't miss. I found the Weathervane Inn and was wondering about the food. What about the rooms?

If we decide to go to Mackinac Island, is 1 night enough? Don't want to spend the money for the Grand but have seen that most places are offering a fall discount midweek. Any recomendations? What about dining?

Then on the way home stopping in Grayling for a quick fishing stop for hubby. I guess I'll just sit and knit. (anyone know of any great knitting shops up that way. I like to hit them when I travel.)

One last question - what about weather? Here at home it has been cool and wet.

Thanks to everyone who answers for all us posters. You all have helped with so many of our trips over the years. I really appreciate the advice.

Does hubby already have his fishing trip lined up? If not, we are fishing in October with a great outfitter in Manistee.

No he doesn't but he has his heart set on trout fishing the Au Sable. Where are you going fishing?

The Manistee.....salmon fishing. If he wants the name and phone # of our guide, let me know...they may know someone to recommend to him for a good outing.

am2pm, if you'll be up north mid-week without a reservation, you'll probably be ok. Weekends tend to be a little busier, although, it's a little early for the leaf peepers.

One night on Mackinac Island would be ok. Check out the Inn on Mackinac, the Murray Hotel or the Island House for alternatives the Grand Hotel. I think it's a beautiful place to visit (and you can walk their grounds for $5 or eat there) but it's a bit expensive to stay there. The other places are closer to the water and all the action.

And here's the weather for Traverse City:
