Leavenworth,Wa questions
 

We are looking for recommendations for accomodation and restaurants.
Also can anyone tell us if the shops are still opened after 6 pm in mid Sept?

The Nutcracker Museum closes at 5:00 p.m. but I'm pretty sure you'll find some stores open in the evening. October is the biggest month in Leavenworth.

We've stayed at several places. We weren't thrilled with any of them, but the best was Abendblume: http://www.abendblume.com/

Last week we had a really great room at the new SpringHill Suites (Marriott) in Wenatchee--25 miles to the east.

The general Wenatchee Valley is beautiful with loads of wineries, if that interests you.

Also, while traveling recently we got in a conversation with some people from Canada who were originally from Germany and they told us that King Ludwig's serves authentic German cuisine: http://www.kingludwigs.com

happytrailstoyou, I was considering staying in Leavenworth in late August for one night just because it's apparently the closest sizable town to the Glacier Peak Wilderness Trinity trailhead.

We will be driving on Highway 2 from Seattle. Should we just stop at the 59'er Diner & Cabins for the night since it's right at the junction to head up the road to the trail? Looks like a funky fun place. Ever stop / stay there? Thanks.

I've never stayed at the 59er, but I think it is a better idea to proceed to Leavenworth, which is an important stop the the North Cascade Loop (and the ten miles of Highway 2 on the west side of Leavenworth is particularly beautiful as it follows the Wenatchee River).

If King Ludwig's isn't for you, have dinner on the deck of Gustav's. The view from there is hard to beat: http://www.gustavsleavenworth.com/

My wife's book group does a retreat to Sleeping Lady every year, and everybody loves it.

Not cheap.

Thanks for reply on the 59'er. I had earlier showed their website to my friend and he strongly voted for it, based in the funk factor. So I have booked the "Big Bopper Bungalow" for one night. Maybe we'll cruise down to Gustav's for dinner.

I will save staying in Leavenworth for a trip with my wife. I want to get her up to that area in any case.

My friend and I are planning a 6 day backpacking trip, the 40+ mile Spider Gap - Buck Creek Pass loop, if it ever melts out up there this year. Still 19 inches of snow at Lyman Lake today.

Looks like my questions got lost with others questions/comments on their upcoming trip so I am going to try again for answers for hotel recommendations in the village area and if stores will be open in the evening mid Sept.

Sorry travellingcouple, did not mean to hijack your thread, just seeking more info on the area. Who knows, if someone had said the 59'er was the best place to stay north of the Columbia then you might be checking in there too! :)

To follow up, the 59'er diner worked out perfectly for us. It was actually better than staying in Leavenworth due to Highway 2 construction which would have delayed our access to the Glacier Peak Wilderness Trinity trailhead if we had gone into town.

The diner bungalow was comfortable and quiet. We had an excellent dinner (I had surprisingly good garlic shrimp skewers), and a huge breakfast omelet that got us started up the trail.

Clearly not for everyone's vacation, but for our situation it was perfect.
