leaf Peeking next week

Will be in central and southern Vermont the week of 18 October. Will I miss the foliage at it's peak ?

Patrick Oct 9th, 2004 10:58 AM

Was that title meant to be a play on words? Peeking at leaves at their peak?

Actually I thought "leaf peeking" is what a Chinaman does when he emigrates.

armand Oct 9th, 2004 11:14 AM

A cninaman. A CHINAMAN. That is NOT politicaly correct sir.

Nimrod Oct 9th, 2004 11:22 AM

Yes, it would appear that in Patrick's quest for cuteness, he chose to ignore the fact that 'Chinaman' is a derogatory term for a person from China, synonymous with 'chink'.

Bad form. Very bad form.

We just returned from the Manchester, Vt area. The foilage should be fine around the 19th. It was just peaking in the Killington Mtns and around Quechee (sp) park which is about 1.5 hours away to the north and east.

Patrick Oct 9th, 2004 03:40 PM

I know a man who worked for Lennox and sold china. He never objected to being called a Chinaman.

Anybody who thinks Chinaman derogatory would also have to think Canadian Man, New York man, or Frenchman derogatory too. Right?
This political correctness thing has gone too far.

Thanks fbh. Hope your correct. Will be in Manchester on or around the 20th.

Hi John

Had to run a bunch of errands today that took me to Rutland, Manchester and Arlington. Higher elevations have a fair amount of color - though not quite peak in southern VT. It is/is going to be a particularly spectacular fall. Unless we get hit by a windy storm that blows the leaves down, you should have a great foliage experience when you're here around the 18th. It was great today, but still a ways to go...

Drove through central Mass. yesyerday. I'd say we are about 7 to 10 days from peak. As long as their are no heavy rains, you should a have a grand view of the leaves.....every corner will be a differnt picture....have fun

Drove from Providence RI to Worcester MA yesterday and we were surprised at the amount of color along the route also the amount of color when we traveled from NH down to Providence last Thursday. There is a lot of color right now in the trees along the highway (Rt 495). We thought it was as much as the Concord NH area. But the oaks haven't even started to turn yet. Remember this folks, different varieties also turn at different times. It is too bad the idea of peak ever started. Central and southern VT should be great. If not, just drive a few miles.

Chinese man is fine. Chinaman is not.

BTW, it's leaf peeping, not peeking, at least where I live in New England. But either way, you should see some foliage for 18 October. Have fun!

We are in Manchester right now. It is gorgeous but there is still lots of time for foliage lovers. Yesterday we drove across 2 in MA thru the Berkshires, that was gorgeous. The best leaves we have seen so far have been up in the northern Adirondaks (a few days ago.)

thelmaandlouise Oct 18th, 2004 06:09 AM

Well John, sadly for leaf-peeking, the worst happened: two days of wind and rain in Southern VT. There's still color but the stormy conditions have thinned the foliage a little, leaving lots of yellows (aspens that hang on till the bitter end!) :(

Hope you have fun while you're in Vermont. Let us know how your trip was!

makai1 Oct 18th, 2004 02:13 PM

Just back yesterday from Ottawa, Ontario and it has been in peak color ALL week.

Stunningly gorgeous!

I know this us US board, but thought y'all might be interested for next year!

Returned home to Montana 24 October. Flew into Manchester, N.H., visited Freeport, Me., drove through N.H. and on to Ben &Jerry's(a must)
and then down rte. 100 and on to Hartford to catch the plane. Colors were a little dissappointing in northern Vt. but were great in western Ma. and northern Ct.
Being orginally from New England, it was great being there as the Red Sox BEAT those damn Yankees.
The curse is dead and I can live happily ever after.
Now if the Pats can win the suoer bowl again----
