Le Veau D'Or Manhattan
 

Has anyone eaten at Le Veau D'or recently? An old friend wants to take me there for dinner in May when I come to visit him. I have read reviews of the place and it seems that "no one under 50 eats there."

I can put up with ancient ladies in kid gloves and blue hair at nearby tables, but I won't go if the food is bad.

What do you think, Manhatan Fodorites?

I think the last time I was there was in 1977.

He loved it, for what it still represented about New York and it's service and historical French Food. You can probably catch a repeat of the show on the Travel Channel sometime before your dinner in May.

Thank you, Liz. I have a feeling that my friend saw Tony Bourdain's show and that is why he wants to go there.

He normally takes me to Le Train Bleu at Bloomingdale's, which I think is positively dreadful.

My friend is an odd bird who collects old Orbach's charge-a-plates and Redfern corsets. :)

Saveur did a major feature on the place a few years ago...

I've not been in years and years but I think it would be worth visiting based on that article if you want the kind of retro dishes they serve..

Thin - fwiw, Zagats rates the food an 18 - that is quite low at any price.

Actually Thin, the name reminds me of Edward G. Robinson in the Ten Commandments in the scene with golden idol. One of the funniest bits of misacasting in movie history..
