Layover in Los Angeles

I arrive from Vietnam tour at 8:50 AM 2/22. Had a 17 hr layover & then a change in Dallas to Boston. I decided to stay over on the 22nd & 23rd & go direct to Boston on 24th AM flight. I am a woman travelling alone, never been to L.A. Do you have a rec for a reasonable hotel, good loc & suggestions on what to do for 2 days? Shopping is not my thing. I would like to see as much as I can. Thank you.

Can you tell us some other things that you are interested in. The Getty would be nice, but you should rent a car.

LA is very spread out & public transport is not very good. There is one thread I remember reading here about a good hotel without a car. I'll try to find it & post the link.

I would find a Downtown full service hotel and stay there, that way you could take a Grayline tour.If you choose a LAX arpt hotel you will really need a rent a car.As far what to see/do..I took my mom to The Huntington Musuem and Gardens and see loved it! I think the Getty musuem is pretty good, too.

Thanx for the replies. I probably will be pretty toured out after 3 weeks in SE Asia. Just looking for a clean, safe, reasonable hotel near "touristy" sightseeing pickup stops and decent restaurants. How is the movie set tour? Or Homes of the Stars? Lame?

Mlea-I highly recommend the Paramont studio's tour-you'll see all the neat behind the scene's props and see how movies are made! Universal Studios,to me,is mostly for kids. Also,Olvera St ios is interesting, old LA with a strong Hispanic flavor.Do you like to shop? Some of the big malls might be worth a look-South Coast Plaza,ect...

The Holiday Inn Bel Air often has some decent special rates. They have a shuttle to the Getty (a must-visit) and to the UCLA area (many restaurants and theatres). You can also hop the City bus for a leisurely self-tour through Beverly Hills and into Hollywood. Walk up to Hollywood Blvd to see the Kodak (oscar theatre) and take the Metro to Universal. You can take the amusement-park-like Universal tour or just visit the shops and restaurants outside.

At Hollywood and Highland outside the chinese theatre, you can sign up and take a Grayline tour of stars homes, or historic hollywood or even a day tour to Disneyland.
