LAX to Wilshire Blvd question
 

Hi
It has been too long since I have been in LA.
I remember the airport being farther from everything.
We are flying down, possibly only for the day ..I don't want to rent a car, mapquest says this is a 22 minute drive, can that be right?
Is a taxi or a car/driver a good idea, or do we really want to rent a car for a day?

Maybe if it is 3 A.M.

Obviously mapquest did not factor in the traffic which can vary from bad to world class. If you are only going to one location on Wilshire Blvd., AND if it is near the 405 freeway, then spare yourself the agrivation and take a cab.

If not (Wilshire is a looong street), or if you are going to stay more than a day, then it is a tossup.

Yeah, 22 minutes or 12 miles.
I figure we will cab it to the appt on Wilshire, then if we are staying more than one day, we will rent a car.
I remember those freeways...shudder :)

But it will be fun to go look at where I used to live ..

Scarlett, Yes, you could take a taxi to Wilshire Blvd. We always tell people to rent a car when visiting and doing the tourist thing, but since you are only coming for the day, it would take less time and energy to just grab a cab, then it would be to catch the shuttle to the car rentals off airport, etc. and do the reverse later in the day.

I live a few miles south of LAX at a beach town, and allow a half hour to get to Wilshire. That is NOT during the morning and evening work commutes. I make appts. at 10:30 am on the westside, and have no problem getting there. Add 15 minutes for downtown.

If you do rent a car, check back, and we'll tell you the short cuts (La Cienega Blvd.)to spots on Wilshire.
For example: going to Farmer's Market or The Grove.

As has already been mentioned, Wilshire is a very loooooong street. Where exactly are you trying to get?

OK, We will not be taking this trip until Feb, I think)..we will be in the 5000 Wilshire Blvd area..between La Cienega and Western. ( or so says google)..
Close enough to Beverly Hills, I think.
We thought we were just going for the day, maybe overnight, now we might have to be there about 72 hours..so hotels are my next homework :)

OK, that's Hollywood-ish-- Wilshire and Highland, east of where Lynne lives. From LAX, the straight shot up La Ciénega is the best option IMHO. Then it's a right on Wilshire and follow that to your final destination.

Thirty minutes is a conservative estimate. Forty is more realistic.

I'm not sure about hotels in that immediate area, but if you have a car, I'd just break down and stay at the Beverly Wilshire-- just down the street a piece. And very nice indeed.

Scarlet, a good rule of thumb in LA is triple the miles to get an approximate time travel, for instance for 12 miles, that'll be closer to 35 minutes. Though in Wilshire, almost anytime of day, is tough--45 minutes most likely. Take a cab--probably less stressful than sitting in traffic and cab drivers normally know shortcuts.

I used to live about 4 miles from the Cedars-Sinai Hospital right by Beverly Hills. Well, my water broke at exactly noon--lunch hour! Needless to say, I sat in my car for 30 minutes trying to get to the hospital. Needless to say, we moved a month after that. My point is, LA traffic is a pain!

Yes, good idea, I will look into the Beverly Wilshire, ( I am sure that $525 +) a night won't make the Yankee blink...lol.
A cab it will be..if we need a car we can rent it once we are settled at a hotel.
