LAX to Hollywood center by public transit
One more question:
I don't know if anyone's pulled this off (or if such a service exists), but is there a way I can travel to Hollywood/Highland area from LAX via public transit? My friend's responsible for renting a car once we get downtown, but could we still reach there without a car or cab of some sort? (we're just a little intimidated by the driving conditions in LA is all, since we're new in town. Plus, the Metro website is confusing as all-out.) Any advice would be great, thanks

Are you proposing to get to downtown LA by public transportation and then pick up a car in downtown LA?
IMHO, that's not a good idea.
You might as well pick up the car at the airport and drive to wherever you need to.
If you're just visiting, that's too much time wasted taking public transportation.
Try not to travel during peak commuter hours and map out your route ahead of time. One person who is good at navigation can play navigator and everyone look out for the freeway signs to make sure you get on the right freeway at the intersections.
It's really not that bad. How much driving have you all done in metropolitan areas?

I agree. There are car rental places near LAX that will usually be cheaper than right at the airport or downtown LA. Try the Hertz place in Venice or Culver City (or Budget or Enterprise or Fox). That's a fairly short cab ride from LAX, not enough $$ to spend a lot of time trying to save on. It'll be less than $200/wk there. There's no need to waste time getting to downtown LA on buses to then rent a car there. Get it at or near the airport and don't pay more than $200/wk. It should be easy.

Oy...I guess I'll take a pass on the whole bus idea. It's just that I rely on public transit a lot where i live, and thought it'd be convenient getting around LA at best. Anyways, thanks for the tips guys.

Public transit from LAX to Hollywood is very easy, and probably won't take you any longer than taking your rental car shuttle at LAX, waiting in line for you car and navigating your way through traffic.
First of all, the mta site is quite simple. You just click on "trip planner" and then you plug in LAX as your departure and HIGHLAND STATION or RENAISSANCE HOLLYWOOD as your destination. Presto.
It's not clear from your post that you understand "Hollywood" and "Downtown" as two different areas. To get from LAX to downtown, you take the Flyaway Express which is $7 but picks up right outside baggage claim, circles the airport, and rides express lanes to downtown (Union Station) without stopping. From Union Station you hope the ($1.25) metro subway up to Hollywood.
Depending on what time you arrive at LAX....your Flyaway bus should take about 35-45 minutes and then your subway ride about 20 mins. The subway station is right at Hollywood and Highland or there are a couple of other stops in Hollywood.
Hollywood has a Budget office and a Hertz office. There are a couple of Avis offices a short bus ride away. And you may not even need a car depending on what your plans are or may only need the car for one or two of your days. Like I said, the trip planner is quite easy, you can plug in for instance HIGHLAND STATION as your departing point and FARMERS MARKET as your destination, the route, price and times will pop up and you can print out your plans ahead of time and have them with you if you wish.
Also there is a tourist information center right there at Hollywood and Highland.....maps, brochures and an employee to assist you.
I will note that if you want a car for some or all of your stay, reserve it in advance as rates will be lower than if you walk-up last minute. Rates in the city are generally a bit lower than at LAX, plus you do not have as many airport-related taxes to pay. So, in short, your idea to take a relaxing public transit trip from LAX to Hollywood is a good plan....(just know that at certain busy hours of the day such as 4pm to 7pm, the subway ride can be crowded so there won't be much room for large bulky baggage.)
