LAX Terminal 1 to Terminal 2

Help! Anyone familiar with LAX terminals, how far is it from Terminal 1 (Southwest) to Terminal 2 (Air New Zealand) and is it possible to walk between the two with luggage; are luggage carts available for use between the terminals? To take the shuttle, which direction does it go, from 1 to 2, or do I have to go all the way around, and where do I pick it up?

Easy walk. Carts are for rent on the lower level. There is an inter-terminal bus,"A" bus but you'll only go one stop.

Just walk there, it's not far. Only bad thing is you exit security and need to be rescreened upon entry to the terminal.

Are you sure Air New Zealand is Terminal 2??? Most international flights are terminal 4.

Yes, clairdesol has the correct terminals. You can get a luggage cart when you pick up your luggage from Southwest. Wheel it to your Air NZ check-in. The terminal bus goes in the direction you want, but you ought to walk.

Not all international flights are at the Bradley international terminal. Terminal 4 looks like it is AA and AA Eagle only.

You can get a nice terminal map at the url below. Mouse over the terminals to see the carriers that they serve.

http://www.lawa.org/lax/laxframe.html

Click on Maps
Click on LAX Terminal Map
Mouse over the terminals to see carriers
Double-click on terminal to see a map of the terminal (street-side to right on T1 &2).

If the terminal bus is there at the sidewalk when you come out of terminal 1, then you could take it to save a couple of minutes.

Terminal 1 is very close to Terminal 2. If you have no luggage, you can run from one terminal to the other in about 45 seconds. There are no free carts, but sometimes people don't return carts to the machine (so you can use them). It is probably easier to walk then to wait for the shuttle. To get to the shuttle bus, you need to go to the lower level, cross 3 lanes of traffic to get to the median island and then do the reverse at terminal 2. The shuttle (and traffic) only goes one direction in a circular path.

Air New Zealand does operate out of Terminal 2. Terminal 2 was the old international terminal. Before the 1984 Olympics, a new international terminal was built. A few years later, Terminal 2 was renovated. It's one of the cleaner terminals (about equal to the international terminal and Terminal 5). Terminal 6 is the dullest terminal.

If you walk, you can walk on the upper level.

Thank you all so much for your help! Sounds easiest just to walk, so I'll give that a try.

Most airlines in the U.S. have "interline" agreements - that means that when you check-in luggage at your departure city you don't see the luggage again until you get to your destination city. At LAX all you have to do is get yourself over to Southwest's terminal. But I would check with your particular airline.

I know it is different in other coutries i.e. when I fly to Australia (from U.S.) I always have to pick-up my luggage in Sydney (Int. Terminal) and then get it over to Sydney's Domestic Terminal for my next flight within Australia.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked with Southwest (the airline I am taking to LAX) and they cannot check bags through for an Air New Zealand flight (because it's an international flight).

Southwest has no interline aggreements for ticketing or baggage. But its not a bad case at all.And the cost savings usually associated with Southwest is well worth the "trouble".
