LAX and only 50 min. can I make it?

I will be landing at LAX on delta at terminal I at 9.22pm. I have to catch a northwest plane at terminal 5 at 10:00p.m. I know thats only 50 min. and I have never been in this airport. Are they close or is there an easy way to get from one to the other?

That's only 38 minutes from the time you land.

I would say 'no'.
The terminals are on opposite sides of the'U' shaped structure. If you have luggage, forget it.

I think you really only have about a half an hour. My friend works the gate for US Air at the San Diego airport. He said no one is permitted to board a plane with less than 20 minutes before departure. Period.

I hate to be discouraging, but I don't see how you will make it. Especially if you have to check your baggage. Even with carry-on only you'll be cutting it close. By the time you exit the aircraft, find your way to the street, hop on one of the shuttles, (or run across the parking lot), go through security once again and find your way to the gate within 20 minutes before take off....my hopes are not high for you. Here is a map of the terminals. I would cut through the parking area on foot (on map see "TA" and cut through here) if I were you to maximize time. Good luck!

Another "no". You have to be at the gate before 10 to get on a flight that leaves at 10. And as sf7307 points out, you have 38 minutes, not 50. and that's if your Delta flight arrives on time. If you have checked luggage that would be transferring from one flight to the other, it probably won't in that time.

Last time I checked, Delta was in Terminal 5, and Northwest in Terminal 2, on opposite sides of the airport. I also doubt you will make it. Just the TSA line can take 30 minutes.

Is this a legal connection? Can't imagine that it is. And if you have two separate tickets and you don;t make it - then you're stuck. will have to find and pay for your own hotel and a new on-going flight - since neither airline is responsible.

I would check on how late your incoming flight usually is - but would think your chance of making this is practically nil.

sf7307 May 20th, 2009 10:17 AM

Delta and Northwest have "combined" so it's probably one ticket, but regardless of whether he'll be "protected", he still won't make the connection!!

I am sure Delta is in Terminal 5 and Northwest is in Terminal 2 and you definitely can not make that short a connection. I would really question the airline on this one as I can't believe they think you can make it from one to the other.

The OP's flights may have already happened, but here's an update. As of yesterday, Northwest flights will now land and depart from the Delta Terminals (5 and part of 6) at LAX. www.dailybreeze.com/latestnews/ci_12708456

If you need additional confirmation that you can't make it, consider that you'll be 15 minutes getting off the arriving plane at least. Tarmac traffic at LAX is unpredictable even if you land on time, getting to the gate and getting a gate are both potential delays. TSA's line is unpredictable. I would think at 10 pm the line would be modest, but you can never be sure. Your bag would never make a terminal change transfer in that time period.

Put yourself on the next earlier flight to LAX and have a leisurely dinner.

The 50 minute stress riser for an improbable connection and a probable unwanted overnight stay isn't worth it.

Since this was asked in May, OP has either missed or made that connection.

suze Jul 1st, 2009 03:35 PM

You are assuming you'll land on time.

All it takes is for your arriving flight to be 15 mins. late and there's no way you could possibly make it. This is not about LAX specifically, but anywhere. I'm surprised it's a legal connection.

Okay, my update post was to let people know that Northwest and Delta are now in the same terminal -- Terminal 5. If the OP's (or any others who might have similar connections)flight is happening after July 1, then 50 minutes should be sufficient connection time.

It will probably take a while before all the booking sites catch up with this terminal change, so if he booked this flight in May for a post-July departure, he has nothing to worry about.
