LAX airport
 

Which hotel to stay at near LAX will only be there 6 or 7 hours .. Won't get in till late and leave very early next morning.. Thanks

i have not stayed there recently, but radisson has just been completely renovated, I understand.
did stay at marriott and hilton which were both ok, nothing special, though the marriott had a rooftop lounge with a view of the LAX apron. just airport hotels all of the three mentioned here have complimentary shuttle service and are only minutes away. but then again that goes for westin, renaissance and sheraton / sheraton four points and so on, too.

Actually, my suggestion is simple. Given you're there to crash, you might let us know the lodging programs with which you earn points-- or those that earn you airline miles-- and we could tell you if the hotel in the immediate LAX area is any good.

Basically all of the hotels on West Century (with the exception of the Travelodge, which is a motel next to busy train tracks) are acceptable, as are those listed on Airport. The Radisson is the very closest, but all of them are a short shuttle ride away. I would say that you can safely go with the least expensive of the bunch.

Can't answer your question but I have a question. What does the X in LAX stand for?

This is kinda interesting. In the beginning years of aviation, it was decided that airports would be designated by three-letter codes; initially, codes were created by using the two-letter National Weather Service weather station code and adding an "X". LAX seems to be one of the very last of these pioneer airport codes.

thanks rjw_lgb_ca for the exlanation. It seems strange that they use this "code" as their name with the huge LAX letters at the airport entrance.

The LAX name has just stuck. It's faster to say than "LA Airport", and has a certain zoomy, "this is the future where we don't use words" quality to it. Plus, putting "Los Angeles International Airport" in those big letters would stretch from Westchester all the way into Manhattan Beach....

Here's some trivia to wow the others in the gate lounge: Do you know the origin of O'Hare's code (ORD)?

Simple: It refers to a historical airfield, ORcharD Place.

For bonus points: Orange County CA (SNA)?

Answer: It refers to a city in which you DON'T find the airport (but it's still in Orange County): SaNta Ana.

BTW when I was a kid I used to think that LAX was short for EX-LAX.

I found a really good rate (about $59, including taxes) at the Crown Plaza LAX. It is a non-refundable, non cancellable rate and I believe it was maybe called internet users rate or 21 day advance rate. They have an airport shuttle.

The Crowne Plaza is a good choice (mid-level city hotel, not super-luxo but quite comfy), and you're only about 3 blocks from the entrance to LAX. Note that the shuttle is shared with their long-term airport parking service, so it can get full.

By all means The Crowne Plaza. We missed our connection fron Sydney to Memphis and Qantas put us up there.

Whenever I go to the LAX area, I bid on Priceline. I got the Crowne Plaza for $30/night about a month ago. I just returned from Disneyland yesterday at got the Hyatt near Disneyland for $38/night. So---try Priceline and select the LAX Airport area only.

Thanks to all who responded. I looked up Radisson and can get it for $79 plus tax of course and it seems to be close, will look up the crown plaza also. Also the credit card I use earns me points so I can use that everywhere I go.I am new to this board so thanks again..

I just stayed at the Crowne Plaza to catch an early a.m. flight. It was fine, but I wouldn't pay more than their $59 internet rate. If you can get them for $30 on Priceline, it would be worth it.
