Laundry in New York

The most frustrating part of our family trip to New York for 10 days over Christmas & New Year was the lack of laundry facilities. We asked at our hotel and were advised that Chinatown was best for coin operated laundries. We asked at West Broadway Cleaners in Tribeca about their costs. I was pleasantly surprised to find that their cost was $1.50 per pound. They weighed our laundry bag at 22lb and we paid $33.00 for a very professional service of washing & folding. The cost would have been more for a cab both ways and the coins for both washing & drying. The moral of all this is check out the Dry Cleaners in New York before you try anything else!

Tribeca does not have as many residential services as many other neighborhoods in Manhattan. I suspect this is true because it has only become a real residential neighborhood in the last 20 years. Many of the buildings in the area that are residential are recently renovated and would feature their own laundry rooms. Most lofts would probably have their own laundry facilities as well.

Most people in NYC that don't have washers/dryers in their apartments or laundry rooms in the basement (many, since typically the older buildings pipes won't support a full size washer, even if there is room) do the same - just drop it at the cleaners for washing by the pound and delivery.

In NYC you don't do things - you give them to people to have done and then delivered back to you.
