Views of the GGB from Baker Beach are nice, but at night, not too sure - I'm not not a local. There's a nice view from a not so well known lookout in the Sunset at the end of 14th Street. Ask on photo.net. You'll get more informed responses.

I second the photo.net recommendation. Also take a look at www.danheller.com. He is a pro travel photographer and has supposedly the largest travel photography site on the Web. He lives in that area you are visiting. Try e-mailing him.

Try to be at Coit Tower just before sunset, especially if there is some fog rolling in to the bay. You can get some absolutely spectacular photos up here at dusk.

If there is no fog, the view of the bay and GGB from the Marin Headlands is breathtaking. We were there 7 years ago for our honeymoon and experienced such a night; the area was full of people either taking their own photos or having professional photography done. Full moon and the lights of the city--beautiful!

Just realized you won't have a car--getting to this area could be a bit tricky in that case.
