Late April spring break ski trip-Is this possible even out west?
Our public school's spring break is April 15th-23rd for 2006. I've cked the ski resorts out west and most propose to end their season on 4/23rd so we would be there for the last wk of ski season. Of course, if the snow is good, I suspect the season would be extended and vice versa, if the snow is poor, they would close early. I need to use my timeshare for accomodations so I've looked at Breckenridge. Do you think this will work? A friend said the elk are mating this time of year so skiers/snowboarders are very restricted where they can go even if there is snow. Any suggestions or should I just dish the plan to take my son snowboarding for spring break?

Arapaho Basin will be open, probably through June. Rates will be very good at Keystone and Breckenridge, and A-Basin is a short drive away from there, so you could still get in some skiing. A lot of places have to close because their help is contract and/or seasonal--so lots of snow, but no employees! Snow is predicted to very good this season, by the way.

Last year Heavenly at Tahoe was trying to stay open through Cinco de Mayo (May 5). Mammoth Mountain was open thru June. They say that the California Resorts close down because of lack of interest, rather than lack of snow.
Tahoe would probably be your best bet for a timeshare exchange. |
BYW, the elk mating season is fall, and there's almost no skiing in the fall, except on a few runs at a few ski areas, and there are no elk running through those areas!

I agree with A-Basin. Snowbird, Alta, Snowbowl(?is that the right name?) in Utah also come to mind for spring skiing.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. It looks like there may be some hope to salvage a late spring ski trip! Plus, thanks, sylvia3, for clearing up the elk mating problem! So glad I didn't call out there to ask and find out I'm talking about the wrong season which makes sense-mate in fall w/ babies in spring. I'll keep working on this.
