Last minute tips for trips to Washington DC
 

Hi folks, <BR>Just wondering if anyone based in Washington has any last minute tips for a traveller to washington in mid Feb. <BR> <BR>Thanks <BR> <BR>Cathy

If you're going to be here this weekend, we're supposed to have temperatures well above normal - mid 60's.

And don't worry about that shooting at the White House. Just another day in D.C. It's beautiful here today, and is supposed to be even warmer tomorrow.

My husband was at the White House when the shooting occurred. He said everything is back to normal now.

Don't try to drive. Just walk and take <BR>the subway (VERY safe) and don't miss the changing of the guard at the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier. It is a very interesting city and you'll always remember your visit everytime you watch the news.

Ilisa, is it my imagination, or is the level of violence at D.C. attractions on the rise? We had a shooting at the zoo, two or three shootings at the White House in the last few years, the Capitol shootings. Plus, we had the nut who flew a plane into the side of the White House. I'm starting to wonder whether the security is inadequate.

You know, Cindy, I hadn't thought about it that way. I can't exactly say that security is inadequate with regard to the White House, only because you can only do so much without turning the city into a police state. For example, there isn't much that can be done about a plane flying into the side of the White House and the shootings (the one in 1995 and yesterday) occurred outside the White House perimeter. But, you do raise an excellent question. It would be a shame if the city had to start putting metal detectors and the like at attractions such as the zoo.
