Last Minute October Trip with Babies
 

I'm looking to take a week-long vacation with 2 babies (23 months and 9 months) at the beginning of October. The toddler hates long car rides so we'd prefer to stay in one place or limit ourselves to short commutes.

It's been a stressful summer so we want something low key. Part of us leans toward renting a beach house somewhere, but we live in S. California and are looking for a new experience. Maybe something "fall-ish" since we really don't experience much in the way of seasons.

My toddler is really fascinated with animals right now, so the ideal vacation might involve a cabin in the woods. They both do as well as can be expected on planes, but we'd like to minimize flight time and time spent in terminals. Both slept through a cross-country red eye to Hartford, but we don't want to press our luck

Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Lake Tahoe?
Northern California?
The Olympic Peninsula of Washington?

Idylwild or Big Bear, even Lake Arrowhead come to mind.

What about Mammoth Lakes? I spent almost every summer in Mammoth when I was a kid and loved it.
