Las Vegas Transportation
 

My wife and I will be in Las Vegas in a month. People seem to always talk about the traffic on the strip, saying things like "don't rent a car", "taxi's are hard to get" . . . . Are the roadways pretty easy to navigate? We've even considered limo service to and from the airport. I know we're going to need a car to head to the dam. Any suggestions as far as transportation?

HHMM, taxis are easy to get because they are lined up in front of every hotel. When we walked down the strip and got tired, we just walked to the front of the nearest hotel we were in front of and got one. We did have a car in our party which was convenient for exploring off the strip, but going from hotel to hotel you can take trams or walk to really see each one. Traffic on the strip will be bad but there are roads that go behind the hotels you can use once you get used to the layout. The airport is literally right there, you turn one corner and you are on the strip. very close. Have a great time !

Just returned from Las Vegas and took advantage of bus #301 which runs the length of the strip--cost is $2.00 per ride, or for a far better deal, $5.00 for any 24-hr period. Stops are all along the strip, bus was never crowded and air conditioned. Suggest you go out door 12 by baggage claim and get on a Las Vegas Limo shuttle bus-cost is $4.25pp to strip hotels--hope this helps.

My husband and I were in Las Vegas in July. We rented a car for the week since we drove to Hoover Dam and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

We valet parked for free + tips up and down the strip. Waiting times for the car were never bad and were great people watching opportunities. Driving on the strip was pretty congested, but there was so much to look at.

We knew it would be hard when we came home to not go to the curb and hand our keys to someone!

FlyingKate, Leaving for Vegas (1st time) on Tuesday, have a couple of questions for ya..
Where do you catch the 301 bus? Also are there city buses that will take you to the dam?
The Limo shuttle service, is that in a limo or on a shuttle van? Thanks.....

I just got back from Vegas!..The bus will stop in front of most of the major hotels on the strip..there is a stop in front of Treasure Island, The Venetian, The Alladin, New york New York and the Luxor..to name a few..Like the previous post said..it was $ 2.00 one way..and it really wasnt bad. We took buses in the afternoons and cabs at night..For The Hoover Dam..im pretty sure the city buses DONT go to the damn..but TOUR BUS COMPANIES do. You can ask the concierge at your hotel..most tours will pick you up at your hotel, take you to the dam and spend a few hours there..

Well I'll totally disagree with the last poster.
Driving in LV is easy if you simply stick to Industrial Road on the west side of the Strip, Koval and Paradise Lane on the east side.
Any taxi driver worth his or her salt doesn't drive on the Strip except to enter the hotel itself.

And if you're going to Hoover Dam, why waste a huge amount of time with a tour and risk being subjected to their ploys to dump you off at tourist spots they receive kickbacks from and all the extra wasted time associated with herding a bunch of people around? Driving in Nevada is a snap, and the dam is a straight shot south. If you don't want a car for the whole stay, simply rent one for the day you go to the dam.

I visit Las Vegas at least once a year and I always rent a car. I agree that all you have to do is drive on Koval or Paradise or one of the other streets off the strip to get around that part of the city. Daytime traffic on the strip isn't bad. Nights, yes, you can sit and sit at the many long-lasting red lights if you drive Las Vegas BLVD. Then you can pick a well situated casino, valet part, and easily walk to a number of places on the strip and pick up your car later.
Taxis are plentiful, yes. So are the buses. I just prefer having my own transportation so that I can run out to Hoover Dam or down the strip to the shopping mall, or out to the outlet mall at the far south end of the strip. I love the freedom I have with a rental! If I want to drive down to Prim to the upscale shopping outlet, I can do that as well. I'll take a rental car everytime!

Just got back from Vegas and were not planning any out-of-strip tours since we've done that before so we used the bus all the time as posted previously. HIGHLY recommended- very efficient, stops at major hotels (you can just walk to the ones adjacent to the stop)and inexpensive at $2/p or $5 for an all-day pass. Only used a taxi from the Venetian where we stayed to the airport on our trip back home so we will not miss our flight ($12 inc tip).

Taxis are easy to get and a great way to get around. You can walk anywhere along the strip, but, if you want to go off the strip and need a taxi, simply go to the entrance of any hotel, voila! The roadways ARE easy to navigate but having a car is way more trouble than its worth (parking, etc.)
