Las Vegas to GC -Suggestions Please!
My husband just found out he has a trade show in LV the middle of March. We thought that I could fly out and meet him towards the end of the show, spend a couple of nights in Vegas, and then possibly make a trip to the GC. We'd be flying into and out of LV. I guess the question I have is about how many days we should tack on to this trip in order to make the drive there and back. We don't want to rush but we also can't be gone a whole week either. The trade show itself will run from Tues through Sat so we'll have to stay in LV through Sat night, but we could leave on Sun morning for the GC. Would Sun, Mon and Tues be enough time, figuring flying home on Wed or is that not enough time? We would like to see the GC (south rim) and possibly stop in Sedona. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

We just did this in June. Left Vegas at 12noon on a Sunday, and arrived at GC in time to watch sunset and then dinner at Bright Angel lodge. Stayed the nite at Yavapai lodge, got up for sunrise, minor hike down Bright Angel trail, then spent the next 3 hours driving and getting out at all the scenic overlooks (heading east along South Rim), so it was about 24 hours at GC, which was enough for a family of 5. We then drove to Sedona on Monday late afternoon, and stayed in Sedona Mon and Tues nites, then on Wed, drove back to Vegas with a 1.5 hour stop to do the Hoover dam tour. We then stayed 3 more nites and relaxed poolside at Paris Las Vegas before heading back to BWI. Loved that trip like no other. We will definitely go back again.

Thanks luugis for all the suggestions. I'll look into some of the lodges you suggested. Pam

We did the big loop of LV/GC/Bryce/Zion in the summer so I can only help you with the LV/GC piece. The poster above seemed to lay out a good itinerary. We left LV at 8:30 a.m., stopped at Hoover dam for 1.5 hours, quick lunch in Williams and were at the South Rim by 3 p.m. Note: there is not much in the way of fast food restaurants between Kingman and Williams so plan accordingly. I would try to do two nights at GC so that you can enjoy all of the overlooks. If you can do some hiking down into the canyon, I would HIGHLY recommend it. We stayed at Kachina Lodge and were happy to be right on the rim.
Definitely a great trip. Have fun! |
If you drive to the Grand Canyon on Sunday. Spend Sunday and Monday night at the Grand Canyon, and drive back to Las Vegas on Tuesday, that will be enough time to enjoy it. Just be aware that it can still snow in March in the Grand Canyon area. Just keep an eye on the weather before you leave Las Vegas.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Hopefully we'll hit the highlights of the GC and maybe someday return to see more. Thanks again!
