Las Vegas to Dallas trip
 

We will be traveling to Las Vegas in early December and plan to travel to Dallas. We are spending two nights in Las Vegas, one night in Grand Canyon (any suggestions as to where??) and then on to Dallas. Assume we would need two days travel to reach Dallas. Interested in "must see" spots for the road trip to Dallas. Thought we would break the trip up with a night in either Tucson or El Paso? Any suggestions?? Many thanks! Also are we likely to have snow in these areas at that time? We are coming from Australia.

There are 636 miles just between El Paso and Dallas and not a lot to see. Of course, you are on the border of Mexico there and can add another country with a border crossing (I would leave the car in El Paso and cross by foot). If you swing back into New Mexico you could see the Carlsbad Caverns. Texas is a great state but the eastern and southern parts are where most of the people are, not north and west.

The shortest and fastest way to go from Las Vegas to Dallas is via I-40 and US287, via Albuqueque and Amarillo. Not via Tucson and El Paso.

The most interesting place to spend the night along the way is Santa Fe, which is a short detour off I-40. It's also just about halfway between Las Vegas and Dallas.

If you do cross into Mexico, make sure you have a multiple entry visa, and do leave the car in the US. Most rental car companies will not allow you to take a car into Mexico. Personally, I think rkkwan's route is more interesting.

In the Grand Canyon stay at the El Tovar it is on the rim and is a historical lodge. Dinner at the El Tovar is a must.

If you're going to spend the night at the Grand Canyon, I'd suggest spending the next night in Tucumcari, NM, or Amarillo on your way to Dallas. Neither town is wonderfully exciting, but that would break up your time driving into more even sections. It's only about five hours from Flagstaff to Albuquerque, and at least 10-11 hours from Albuquerque to Dallas.

Have not stayed at the Bright Angel. Have eaten at the Bright Angel. Food was good.The El Tovar is my favorite.
Also the El Tovar is celebrating its 100th anniversary and was renovated this past winter. If you decide to eat at the El Tovar you must have reservations. Great meal. Make the reservations before you get to the canyon.
