Las Vegas: Suggestions for an overnight /day trip from Vegas
My fiance and I will be in Vegas May 2006. We have a week and we want to take an overnight/day trip. We thought of Bryce, Zion or Sedona as options. We are just starting to do our research but I wanted to know if anyone had any good suggestions.
Thanks,
Robyn

I love Zion, it is very pretty and May is a nice month to go. I have heard Sedona is gorgeous as well, have never been though. Zion is about 3 hours from here, and I think Sedona might be the same. Zion is great for the nature trails, and the scenery is breath taking. If you go to Zion, please visit the "narrows" and take your camera!! Have fun with whatever you decide! We are going to Zion next month for our annual camping trip there.

"zion and sedona are three hour drive from vegas. how about bryce."
I'm not sure about these timings. Based on a recent trip to that area, I'd say Zion was about 2.5 hours. Bryce is a hundred or so miles beyyind Zion so that's extra time. Also, I'm pretty sure there's no way you could get near Sedona in 3 hours (and we were driving at a fair pace). Some more local posters than me will be able to advise better on these drive times.
If you have a week on Vegas, it would definitely be worthwhile making an overnight stay outside the city. if you pick one of trhe amazing parks in the area to visit, you will get a great contrasting trip from Vegas too.
My ideas would be (depending on how long you take from Vegas):
Half-day trip : Red Rock Canyon
Day-trip : Hoover Dam combined with Valley of Fire, Zion (at a pinch)
Overnight stay : Zion, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Bryce (at a pinch)

Las Vegas to Zion National Park is 165 miles and approx. 2 hours 40 minute drive one way. If you add Bryce it's another 86 miles and another 2 hour drive just to the entrance of Bryce.
Las Vegas to Sedona is 285 miles and approx. 4 hours 40 minute drive one way.
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon is 280 miles and approx. 4 hrs. 50 minutes drive one way.
Zion would be my first choice for scenic beauty and closeness to Las Vegas. If you are only spending one night on the road, then I'd probably skip Bryce this time. If you could manage 2 nights out, then I'd include Bryce. Sedona is scenic but it's not a National Park. If you want shopping then that would probably be the place for you.
Valley of Fire is good as a day trip from Las Vegas. It's about an hours drive from Las Vegas.
