Las Vegas sin city?

I was going to post this under Bellagio discussion but decided otherwise. To my amazement, there are still people who see Las Vegas as a sin city,I am not an American ,I took my kids to USA last year and we have visited Las Vegas as well as many other places,my kids loved Las Vegas, all the glitter and lights and theme hotels, they had a great time, nowhere in Las Vegas we felt that this place was not appropriate for children, what is it that you consider this town as a sin city? the existence of and the advertisement of prostitution?in many countries in Euprope prostitution is legal and much more visible than Las Vegas, such as Amsterdam,Berlin,Rome,Paris...in London you can not accsess a public phone booth without seeing the sticker advertisements of prostitutes,in many cities in Europe prostitutes or ladies of the night start strolling in all major streets not in sleasy parts of the towns and nobody really is bothered by their existence-those who have been to Europe must have seen it-sex shops are almost everywhere, all public beaches in France,Spain,Greece,Italy there are topeless sunworshipers as it is perfectly legal ,and you believe since Las Vegas might have topless shows, the town in a disgrace and must be kept away from children?they can see all the nudity there is to see in public beaches in Europe..yet are European children more corrupt than American children?
I do not understand this obsession of sex and nudity in the minds of American People,I wish you would spend more energy on gun control laws ,at least children in Europe who are much more exposed-those who have been to Europe will have to agree-to nudity, sex, legalised prostitution, legalised marijuana as in Netherlands,do not kill anybody in schools..Americans protect your children from sex and nudity,etcc..so they can be good citizens, bear arms and kill each other..Las Vegas sin city?do not make me laugh, maybe a sin city in disneyland terms...

This post started as a nice commentary about Las Vegas for kids and turned into a diatribe about how bad America is! I agree with the gun control thing, but did you have to get nasty about it?

Johannes is right....
He should know, he comes from a peaceful continent where there has never been any bloodshed or violence (sure, there was those two world wars, but hey, who's counting). As far as European gun control, it's too bad all those Dutch prostitutes and dope addicts didn't have guns back in 1940, maybe they could have held back the Germans for more than a day or two.....LMAO

Wow,Why didn't we think about it before?ofcourse USA won the war because we all knew how to use those guns, thanks to our relaxed gun laws...and nobody will ever invade America and afraid to invade because they all know that our homes are loaded with weapons, those stupid foreigners all deserve to be invaded..I believe you should get the medal of the year for your input into this matter.

OK Relax,
My only point was that it is ironic for someone from Europe to accuse the US of being violent (by the way, any soccer, err, "football" riots lately?). As to the second part, apparently you are only able to read text at face value, so I'll spell this out very clearly, so that even you can understand: NO I DON'T BELIEVE THAT AN ARMED EUROPEAN POPULACE WOULD HAVE PREVENTED WWII, NOR DO I BELIEVE IT IS WHAT PREVENTS AMERICA FROM BEING INVADED TODAY. My statements re the Dutch was a jab at Johannes in response to his jab at America, presumably the subtlety was lost on you.
Now, since this is a travel forum, I will continue the gun control debate with you in private, [email protected] is your real e-mail address, right?

Am I missing something here? as far as I understand, the remarks of Johannes were related to the fact that we put more importance to sex and nudity related moral values than violant crimes and preventing them ,such as gun control laws etc..Did he say America is bad?no I did not read it that way..everybody calm down...

As a serious response to Johannes remarks about Las Vegas, I'll just say that there is a feeling that it is not the best family destination for children. That is for two reasons. First, there is not a great deal for kids to do because most Las Vegas recreation activities are adult (adult shows and gambling). So if a parent attempts to partake of those recreational activities, they will be leaving their child unattended. Second, it is not viewed as a family destination because the clientele would not like to be disturbed by little kids.

Frankly, I have little kids, and I am quite happy to leave Las Vegas as an adult destination. Shouldn't there be some haven away from kids so that child-free adults can enjoy themselves?

Johannes:

Thank you for reinforcing why I am glad that I do not live in Europe (especially Amsterdam!)!

Sorry, but if I had my choice, I'd much rather live in a country that has relaxed gun laws (not that I'm particularly crazy about them), than in a counry that allows rampant drug use, prostitution, and other social cancers.

And, I suggest that you pull your head out of the sand, and visit one of the many drug rehabilitation centers, marriage counseling centers, and cemeteries to see the REAL consequences of these "benign" activities....

Also, as I understand it, not ALL of Europe has the same laws regarding drug use, prostitution, etc. And while I live in America, I have been to Europe several times, and have NEVER seen or heard of the type of lax approval for these types of behaviors (outside of the Netherlands) that you described.

Regarding Las Vegas, I think that Cindy said it well: Las Vegas is considered by most to be an adult destination. And I agree that there should be at least one place on this planet where no strollers are allowed....

Johannes, for you, and more importantly, your childrens' sake, I hope that you will never have to experience your kids indulging in drugs, etc. Although, if they did, I suspect that your comments would be quite different.....

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Las Vegas is a fun destination for OLDER kids (mine were 11, 13, and 16 when we went). Kids should NOT be left alone ANYWHERE in Las Vegas, and parents should not plan on spending a lot of time gambling if they take kids there. We enjoyed the pirate show at Treasure Island, the Volcano at the Mirage, the Stratosphere, the Fremont Street Experience, the show EFX at the MGM Grand, the amusement park at CircusCircus, the roller coaster at the Sahara, and the M&M store (at least the 11-year-old liked the M&M store). They enjoyed Hoover Dam, and were blown away by the lights on the strip. Oh, and the boys liked the Star Trek Experience. They didn't see anyone they would have recognized as being a prostitute, they did't drink, gamble, or go to a nude show, and we all had a marvelous time. Everyone has different tastes, but I don't for one minute regret taking my kids to Vegas and they were not harmed by the trip in any way.

Thank you Anna, seems like you were the only one person who understood what I was talking about. My original post was a reaction to the letters posted ''Bellagio no kids?''as some people thought that Las Vegas was a sin city.My kids also enjoyed being there.

Wow...that first post sure did spark a lot of controversy...Here's a few thoughts:

1. OUR country (USA) is obsessed w/sex & nudity. Children can turn on the TV and see violence in cartoons, or bloodshed on the news. Video games market violence as well. On the other hand, this is ok as long as are children don't see a pair of breasts on the television. This is wrong and ridiculous.

2. There are several other European countries that have legalized or decriminalized drugs. The big surprise is the crime levels are still lower, as are the addicition levels...why? Because people can get help without fear of being arrested and criminally charged!

3. However, despite these two facts, I still believe the U.S. is the best place to reside in the world. Nowhere else does one get the liberties we are privilidged to here. But this is a MUCH to SERIOUS conversation for a VEGAS board...SO...Let's love VEGAS for what it is...and let's keep the KIDS at HOME...OK?

Johannes, this is not about Las Vegas, but about Holland. Can you suggest any good cycling web sites that might list amateur race schedules for next summer? We are considering a cycling vacation in Holland. Thank you.

Cyclist,

I sure the heck hope you're not taking any KIDS cycling with you. Cycling is an inherently dangerous and adult activity, and kids have no business cluttering up the roads, sidewalks and bike paths with their weaving, slow way of riding. Oh sure, bike manufacturers have come out with a line of tiny bikes and helmets to fit little kids, but that is just to sell more bikes and make more PROFIT. I say leave cycling to affluent adults, the way God intended it to be.

In fact, why don't you just stay home with your kids and teach them to walk instead of dragging them all around the world on bikes, for God's sake!

The truth is there's a lot of violent crime in disney-vegas, and a lot of "lost people". Thefts from hotel rooms are common. LV is a big hype designed to take your money. If you go, don't wander from the strip. Take your kids somewhere else if they are little. If they are older, the glitter and lights will appeal, but they'll hate the smoke.
