Las Vegas locals - help needed

We are considering staying at Las Vegas's new Microtel (opened in October) rather than on the strip. It is on Robindale. Is the area safe?

The hotel has a number of advantages over those on the strip, but we don't want to stay somewhere that we'd feel uncomfortable.

I don't think you'll feel uncomfortable at all. It's not an "unsafe" area whatsoever. I believe it's located just near the big outlet center on the far south end of the Strip.

Are you renting a car and what are your planned activities? You will be very convenient to the airport but keep in mind that the big properties along the Strip will be a $10-20 cab ride until it's all said and done, each way. It's not very convenient to the "big" casinos and restaurants.

Thank you for replying!

We are planning to rent a car. It will only be about $50 for the 4 day weekend and we'd save paying for a shuttle back and forth to the airport.

We plan to head to the strip to see several shows, eat, play the slots, etc. I'd also like to do some shopping.

It wouldn't be quite as convenient as being able to work out of our hotel and be on the strip, but I like the idea of having free internet, long distance phone, and breakfast.

We just got back.

The downside to the Microtel was that it was not on the strip and did not have a casino. But I suppose that could be an upside to some.

The hotel was brand new and tastefully decorated (I heard someone say they were aiming for modern and trendy.)

Our room had two queen beds. There was a refrigerator and microwave. The TV was a flat screen on the wall. The shower pressure was great - I planned to try to figure out the brand so that we could buy the same thing for home.

The breakfast had many hot and cold options.

There was free wireless Internet and also free long distance. On Friday, we received a free USA Today (I don't think it is published on the weekends.)

There was a pool, exercise room and guest laundry.

It was located right next to the outlet mall.

I can't imagine a budget hotel being better.

Oh, I love Microtels! Stayed in another state. But location... I guess you had to taxi all the time, for dinners, shows...

Actually we rented a car for Thurs - Sunday for $50. It worked out well and gave us freedom to get around easily.
