My husband and I are planning to stay in Las Vegas for two nights in June, and from there to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Would appreciate any advice re hotels..have thought about Desert Rose?? We are not gamblers, just nosey to see Las Vegas. All ideas welcome. ? any other day trips we should do. Any suggestions of good tours to Grand Canyon.

Some other day trips you should consider are Hoover Dam and the new bridge across the Colorado River with great views of the dam.
Valley of Fire State Park and then along Lake Mead back toward LV.
Death Valley is closer than Grand Canyon and you see some some of the highlights in a day trip.

It's a LONG 250 miles each way from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. Some friends took one of the day bus trips that they purchased in advance from their travel agent-it was supposed to be upscale. They left their hotel at 6 am, and did not return till after 11 pm that night. They were exhausted, and were only allowed about two hours at the Grand Canyon, and had a short boat ride on Lake Mead. They hated the long time they spent on the bus and were so disappointed they didn't plan an overnight there. They admitted it was their fault for not doing more research about the distance. I would think twice about making it a day trip, unless you go by helicopter, which I have heard good things about, though is quite expensive.

We stayed at Desert Rose 3 years ago. It is a condo type complex. We had a one bedroom condo with kitchenette and enjoyed our stay. We could walk to the strip in about 10 minutes, Tropicana area. We did not bother with the breakfast after the first morning as the variety was limited and it was very busy.
We hired a car and drove to the Valley of Fire where we had a fabulous day. Would certainly stay at Deseet Rose if you are not bothered about the strip scene.

My suggestion for what it's worth- fly into Vegas and rent a car. (Got a bid on Priceline for $14/day + fees). Drive up the Strip day or night doesn't matter. From the North end of the Strip, get on I-515 toward Henderson. I liked my stay at the Fiesta hotel/casino right at the end of 515. It seems to be as good as the average hotel on the Strip and is somewhat cheaper.
The reason to stay in Henderson is to get a head start in the next morning on the way to the Grand Canyon. Having the rental car lets you set your own pace to see what you want to see. If you can't stay at lodging at the South Rim think about staying at Williams or Kingman instead of trying to get all the way back to LV. The Fiesta also has a Denny's for your breakfast. By all means stop to see Hoover Dam. There is a highway that goes west of Lake Mead that intersects the Northshore Scenic Drive that will get you to the Valley of Fire without going back into LV. Stay off the bus and the helicopter. My favorite LV buffet (before 3 PM) is at the Golden Nugget (Fremont Street Experience). There you can see the largest gold nugget on public display (62+ lb.)

sueger, Grand Canyon is a looong day. If you want to hike around a little or see different views I would agree with getting a room there if possible and avoid the helicopter ride, a waste of money in my opinion. As for a vegas hotel I would price out Flamingo for the strip or the Golden Nuggett for downtown. Good locations for the $$. You do realize the heat factor in June, yes? Enjoy your trip.
