Las Vegas in August
My husband and I have never been to Las Vegas. We are thinking of going in mid-August. Will it be too hot? I'm concerned about being overwhelmed by the desert heat. We also want to go to Red Rock Canyon, Hoover Dam, and any other interesting places near Las Vegas.

We would like to go for 6 nights. Any recommendations for an itinerary?

I've been in Vegas in August...

I usually can't stand the heat, but didn't have too much of a problem. Sure it was hot, but not unbearable, as walking thru a casino on your journey was enough to cool me off.

On the other hand, my fiance couldn't stand it (and has no problem being in Florida in the summer), and described walking outside as "walking into a life sized oven."

So, it depends upon your tastes. HOwever, it will not likely be enjoyable heading to places that don't have a pool or air conditioning nearby, so i don't know how much fun your excersions would be in August.

Temps of 105-115 will be typical.
It's definitely hot.
Stay by the pools (except between 12-3 PM when it's just TOO hot) or indoors during the midday hours and you'll be OK.

Karen, if you consider 110 and higher too hot then I would suggest not going to Las Vegas during the summer months. Just home from there yesterday and already in the high 80's.

I love Vegas in August. We have been there the last 3 years in August and in March.Of course there is a BIG difference in temps, but really -over 100 and it all feels the same! Hot and dry, sometimes windy. We have gone out to Red Rock, it is great! Take water , we take a picnic and sit in the car and watch the climbers on the rocks, in the spring we take a hike, I am not sure if that would be comfortable in Aug..Hoover Dam can be a bore, traffic is bad and it might be closed due to security.Mt Charleston is the place to go if you want to cool off.Pine trees and very pretty, you will need a sweater!
The most time we have spent has been 5 days. The first day we just walked around and explored the hotels. We booked a lot of the dinners before we left.We gamble so that was a few evenings entertainment. We saw shows.I recommend Mystere,Danny Gans,"O".A lot of people like the Blue Man Group.
One night you can just walk down the strip, people watch, see the Volcano erupt at the Mirage.Go in and out of the casinos to cool off, watch the fountains at the Bellagio.
The time will speed by, Have fun!

Thank you for your advice and your opinions! It sounds like maybe 6 nights is longer than your average trip to LV and surrounding area.

Is August considered an off-peak time? Are we more likely to get a good deal on hotel and air fare?
|
The summer months are considered off-peak in Vegas (due to the heat) and usually offers decent deals. However, some conventions do take advantage of the cheaper rates during that time.

My friend's parents always visit Vegas for 2 weeks in the summer, staying at 2 different hotels during their stay.

When we are there in Aug we notice no difference in prices for airfare from Newark/JFK.
We always get deals with the hotels we stay in so I cannot really comment on that.
There always seems to be a lot of conventions there, all year long, and since there is so much to do inside, the heat really doesn't seem to stop people.
I don't think prices reflect the season in restaurants either.
