Las vegas hotels--can't make up my mind, help!

My husband and I are traveling to LV in October and I have been researching all the hotels and I still just can't make up my mind. I need a little help from people who have been there more than we have (twice, the last time was about 5 years ago). We are both in our early 50's. We plan on staying for a week, so we want something more spacious than a regular hotel room, so I have been researching suites at different hotels. A few of the hotels that I am considering are: the Bellagio(mainly for the fact that they don't have alot of kids there and the view of the fountain), Mirage (mainly for the pool and the tropical atmosphere), the Palazzo(you can get a bigger suite for less than the suites at the previous two places, but don't know much about this one). The pool seems like a double edged sword because if you go somewhere that has a nice pool you probably get a ton of kids or young twentys and it being more crowded. I have heard that there are not a lot of kids at the Bellagio or in their pool, has anyone experienced that? Any other thoughts about these hotels would be greatly appreciated.

You can try Circus Circus Hotel & Casino and Tropicana Las Vegas - A Doubletree by Hilton.

We're in your age bracket and don't care for crowds or kids either, which is why we like the South Point. It's not as flash as the hotels you've mentioned, but that's part of the draw for us. It's on the strip, but barely, as it's way down there all by itself. You'd definitely need a car. There's a massive Whole Foods nearby if that appeals to you.

We like it because it's easy in/easy out, unlike many of the more centrally located hotels, it's generally less crowded, therefore less smoky and the rooms are quite large.

Having said that, I was shocked at the number of kids there on our last trip, but it was spring break and they had a lot of kids activities centered around their 64 lane bowling alley and 16 screen movie theater, but outside of school holidays, it's not bad.

PS - they also have suites, which are probably huge considering the size of the regular rooms.

I wouldn't worry about kids too much in October, except maybe on Saturday night.
Look at the Hilton Elara Condos, across from the Bellagio. No casino directly attached to the hotel so it's a little quieter. Good location, attached to Miracle Mile mall for a few dining options, also pretty close to Paris (dine at Mon Ami Gabi) and all the Bellagio and Caesar's restaurants.

Bellagio, Mirage and Palazzo are all quite near each other. Mirage is clearly a step down from the other two in luxury, but it's certainly luxurious enough. I find Mirage's rooms to be perfectly comfortable and well-appointed; I appreciate your desire for some room to stretch out, but truthfully, how much time will you really spend in your hotel room in Vegas-- well, conscious?

Tee hee.

Bellagio is on my bucket list for my next Vegas stay. I've always enjoyed the ambiance and the dining and entertainment choices there (Picasso is near the top on my list of best meals of my life-- and should be at $300+ per person!). The rooms looks quite tasty. But then again, so do the rooms at Palazzo. Choices, choices...!

In October, there will indeed be less kids around. Which I always love. Mirage's pool attracts a younger, more toned crowd, no doubt, but that won't be a problem. The weather should still be lovely.

The recommendation for Circus Circus mystifies me. The theming is specifically geared to families with kids, and even in the off-season when schools are in session, you'll still have them running around that property. Which is way, way north Strip and rather lame compared to the center-Strip resorts.

I'm getting a lot of mail for the MGM Mirage "luxury" properties: Aria, Vdara and the Cosmopolitan. They fly under the radar for most Vegas visitors; you might find a deal. However, having not stayed there, I'm a bit leery about giving a full-throated recommendation.

rjw gave a very good response. A couple of minor items:
(1) The Cosmopolitan is not part of the MGM Mirage stable. It is owned by Deutsche Bank.
(2) As stated, Bellagio, Mirage and Palazzo are quite close to each other -- if you're driving. If you're walking...well...the Palazzo is about one mile from Belaggio.

Exactly when in October are you visiting? This will have an impact on using the pool. Average highs at the beginning of October are in the upper 80's -- but by the end of October, average high's are in the lower 70's (with average low's in the upper 40's). It may be too cool to use the pool.

We stayed at South Point in January. The rooms were big; price was low. End of good things. The placed reeked of smoke. Food at restaurants were poor.

We moved to The Signature and loved it. No smoke, beautiful room with great views. Lots of good deals. Got a food credit that could be used at MGM Grand.

We found our deal using this website. Sign up for unlisted deals [in the upper right corner] for best deals. I was actually able to get the price down, as the price got lower during the few days just before the reservation.

I really like the Mirage. Another place to consider is The Hotel which is attached to Mandalay Bay. The room we had was a suite and very roomy. The pool area is a busy area, but being that you're going in October, it shouldn't be as bad as the summertime crowds.

In answer to Igott, we are going around October 10th, I think the weather should still be good? From Washington state so it doesn't have to be super hot for me to enjoy the pool

Thanks for correcting my slip-ups, lgott! I was thinking of the Signature when I typed Cosmopolitan. Not incredibly far off.

And yeah, the Palazzo is a bit of a hike from Bellagio. I'm gauging everything from the Mirage, so....

My in-laws go to Vegas all of the time. They no longer stay right on the strip---but go to the Redrock. It is 15 min. off strip with shuttles that run frequently. Apparently it is in a beautiful setting-----BEfore that they would go to Lake Las Vegas---It's a Hyatt or HIlton, I think---also off strip--with small lake and a resort like setting. don't know room configuration--but since you're going to be there a week---off strip might be nice.

A lot of people are suggesting things off the strip, so just to make sure I can get the information I need, I definitely want to be on the strip

Either palazzo or bellagio.. do not do mirage its older and not as attractive . you truly feel like you're in a "casino. Palazzo and bellagio are both classy .. have great restaurants and you can walk to places nearby.

The pool at the Mirage is what keeps drawing me back to thinking about staying there. Can anyone tell me if the pool there is as great as the pictures on the internet make it look? and will it be so crowded I won't get a chair anyway? Thanks for any information.

Have been to Las Vegas twice - first time we stayed in the Wynn Hotel - very classy and lovely rooms / suites. Since we stayed there they have built the Encore, next door which looks equally nice.
They are at the ´downtown´ end of the main strip, but still close enough to walk to the main areas.
On our second visit we stayed at New York, New York which we did not like - seemed a bit tired and very much a Casino - the Wynn casino was not so "in your face"

The pools at the Mirage are beautifully landscaped. Like most of the newer resort pools, they're not very deep, so they're not a "swimmer's pool" in the sense of being able to do laps.

Nicolesadig brings up something that you must consider: Some casinos are smokier than others. The Mirage and Bellagio are supposed to have invested in powerful HVAC systems to handle the teeming masses of smokers slapping away at the slots, cigarettes dangling from their lips as they sip their well-alcohol free drinks. Bellagio also has some non-smoking areas in their casino. I've always indeed found Bellagio's casino to be less smoky that the Mirage's.

This is going to ultimately boil down to your priorities: Swanky room and public areas versus slightly less-swanky room and cool pools? The Mirage isn't a BAD choice, it's simply downmarket from the high-end Bellagio and Palazzo. I don't see how you lose, choosing between these three resorts. And you can always take a walk to visit the ones you don't choose-- and any others that strike your fancy.

Most of the time I go for a value decision: How much do I really want to pay for a hotel room I'll be using for showering and passing out-- er, sleeping? I know that coming up, I will forego "value" and go for "swank"-- at least once. Until then, I'm comfortable with my Strip view room at the Mirage. YMMV.

Have a great time, whichever you choose!

Whoops-- Elaine suggests two very nice, often-overlooked resorts just north of the Palazzo. Steve Wynn's two properties have pretty high rack rates, but I've seen great deals pretty frequently, so don't rule them out.
