Las Vegas -death valley day trip
 

I am planning on taking a day trip from las vegas to death valley on Feb. 17, 2004. I am not very sure on directions to get there. I am wondering is highway 210 from pahrump to death valley a good road? Is it paved? Is it closed in the winter? How long does it take to get to furnace creek? 3 hrs? Any information would be a great help.

Would you tolerate a bus tour? I took a tour, and was happy with it. We had a stop at an oasis, lunch at Lake Mead, and numerous stops for pictures. The guide told us a lot about the area, gossip and jokes. You can sign up at the concierge desk.

The road should be fine, maybe a bit lonely. Some of the roads in the park will require the use of a four wheel drive. The drive into Echo Canyon (close to Funrace Creek) might need 4X4's. Furnace Creek is open to year-round camping so they would keep the roads open year round as well. I believe is about a 3 hour drive from Vegas.

It's been a while since I've been there and entered from the California side. I would suggest calling the Death Valley National Park at 760-786-2331 for more specific info.

i have been to death valley twice from vegas and have always gone 160 to pahrump, then 178 into the park. this whole section is paved. most of the main sights in the park are along paved areas as well. it takes anywhere from 2.5-3 hours to get there. leave early so you can have the whole day to spend there, but it is a dark, lonely drive back...

There are no Montana, Nevada, Wisconsin or Hawaii "sections."

The drop-down box for picking states is used only to search for topics related to that state. Yes, the road from Pahrump will do fine. 3 hours sounds about right.

Actually you can choose a state or more to post in. You can also choose "all."

If that was not true, every state that you chose to search would have all the same messages.

what Gardyloo means is that there are no Montana . . . (you name the state) sections. ALL THREADS display only on the general USA forum.

Of course if someone searches for a specific state those will display and that is useful for looking for info. But there is no CA or MT or FL board.

That's just one reason "need help" and "look over this Itinerary" thread titles are so lame . . .

I wish Fodors would just eliminate the "general interest" option. It simply does not make much sense since all threads display together they all sort of end up "general interest".
