Las Vegas Choice of hotels

We are going to Las Vegas in June and I am having to pay for two rooms (one for my wife and myself, one for an elderly sister) so budget is slightly important. I have narrowed the options to 4 hotels. Monte Carlo, Mirage, Paris and Rio. When we were in Vegas a few years back we spent an evening at the Rio and really liked it although it is 'off' strip. I would really appreciate opinions of these four hotels. I have spent time looking at TripAdvisor and find it a waste of time. Some say Great, others say Rubbish! I am sure that Fodors give much more realistic views. Thanks in advance.

I would choose either Paris or Mirage because of their central Strip location. We have stayed at Paris several times and have always enjoyed it. We haven't stayed at the Mirage, but I know it's very nice and quite popular.

Last June, I spent three nights in Vegas with my mother (age 76) at the Monte Carlo. The hotel itself was just fine - the rooms were clean and had nice amenities, the dining options on site were nice enough and the location is good. Nevertheless, there is a major construction project practically encircling the property and getting in and out by car was a chore because the detours and lane blockages. However, if you have an older visitor, you must rent a car - the walking distance anywhere are long and the heat will be oppressive (100 degrees+) Valet parking was well worth the few bucks tip.

I suspect the affects of the recent fire have been resolved, and perhaps if people stay away, they may offer deeper discounts on their room rates. So I'd recommend the Monte Carlo property if the access has improved in the last seven months.

I took my husband to the Mirage 3 years ago for his birthday and we really did enjoy it. The pool is great, the hotel staff were friendly and really it was overall a nice place to stay. The location of it is really great since we walked everywhere and when we did need a cab they were easily accessible. Have fun!

Flamingo is the best choice with an elderly person. You don't have to navigate a huge casino every time you want to get out of the place, and once you're outside you have relatively short walks to Caesars, Mirage, Venetian, Wynn, Treasure Island, Bellagio.

We will be visiting Las Vegas with our 13-year old daughter as part of a Sequoia/Grand Canyon/Phoenix trip. We'll be staying for 2 nights, and I'd like to choose a hotel our daughter will love since I don't know when we'll be visiting again. We plan on going to the Cirque de Soleil Beatles show, but haven't given any thought yet to other entertainment. Any hotel suggestions and/or restaurants/entertainment ideas would be extremely appreciated. We will be there in late July. Thanks!

Of the places you mention, Paris would be my first choice. Rio, last.

I can't imagine a 13-year-old girl enjoying any hotel more than the Paris.

The (fake) Eiffel Tower!! The (fake) hot-air balloon!! The (fake) Parisian cafes! What more could you want?

Seriously, Paris is perfectly located at the center of the strip and is a fun hotel. If budget is an issue, Bally's is connected to the Paris and it's cheaper. (Get a renovated north tower room.)

I agree with others - Paris or Mirage, but I would also check out the Luxor. Their rates tend to be VERY reasonable, and their two towers are new, and the rooms are gorgeous. Rio would also be my last choice....

Thanks for the hotel suggestions. I'm glad I asked -- because the only two hotels recommended by friends/coworkers were NY, NY and Mandalay Bay.

Hotel- Paris
I saw LOVE and thought it was not as good as O at the Bellago for this type of show.

When I go down to Vegas with my mom we've always stayed at the Paris and really enjoyed it. But, the last time we took the shuttle over to the Rio and now we're thinking of staying there the next time. The floor entertainment was a lot of time. Remember, because it's part of the Harrah's family of hotels, there's a free shuttle that'll take you from the Rio to the Paris (via Bally's). So you're not really stuck at that location.

Ooops. I meant the floor entertainment was a lot of FUN. Should've read my message before posting.

Have you considered staying off the strip? When we went in Feb., we stayed at Terribles. It's a cheesy cowboy theme with a lot of orange on the outside. But the rooms were clean, the people were very friendly and it was only 1.5 miles off the strip. We walked there some days. There is a bus that come across the street from the hotel (if you ask the front desk they'll know what you're talking about) and you can buy an all day $5 pass. It goes up and down the strip and back to the hotel. We got two rooms and ended paying somewhere around 80-100 per night, per room.

If you want the best of both worlds, Cheap and Ideally located, stay at the Imperial Palace? It is consistently the cheapest hotel on the strip and it is right in the center of the strip!!! Granted rooms are old, but you won't be spending that much time in the room, and it is sort of connected to Harrahs and the tram.

Thanks for your comments. As I have booked to see Bette Midler, I have opted for Caesars Palace which is now showing a really good rate (I think!) $100 per night. I am sure that we will not be disappointed. Thanks again for your help.

I took my parents to vegas and we stayed at the Monte Carlo. Not really 'themed' to the max and there were much shorter walks to the hotel elevators than in any of the other hotels, although the Paris was not bad either. Monte Carlo has a nicer pool. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those 2, especially for location.

Caesar's Palace is a great choice--just be careful that they don't give you a room miles away from the lobby/street if your elderly relative has trouble walking.

You might keep checking rates for Paris and Mirage. The really nice thing about these hotels are the relatively close proximity from the elevators to the street. Paris especially is great if this is a concern, plus it's a great hotel in terms of strip location.

Rio is one of my favorite hotels, but waiting for the shuttle and then getting bogged down in Vegas traffic makes for a lot of wasted time.
