On our last visit to Oahu we drove to the Kailua/Lanakai area. There was a big beach in Kailua that had parking and restrooms. We never did find a beach park at Lanakai. There was access to the beach via small pathways between the homes. The parking was not good because it's in a residential area.

The beaches were absolutely gorgeous the day we were there. The water was more turquoise colored and very calm.

Lakakai is a beautiful beach but you must park on the street in a residential neighborhood. The last time we were there, our car was broken into and our bags stolen. We were there just for a few minutes on our way to the airport. So, leave nothing of value in your car.

Hello, so, go to Kailua beach? can you see the little islands (forgot the name of them) from there? and did it seem safe for parking? can you walk down to lanakai from the Kailua parking area? and last, is it a must see beach?...thanks...sorry for so many questions

Indeed it is a lovely beach, one of my favorites in the world. Unfortunately, I don't remember how we got there, there was quite a bit of road construction and a local helped us figure it out...we parked as others mentioned in the residential area and walked. You'll see the islands if you are in the area, even if you are not right on top of them, just continue to walk down the beach.

*petty crime is a problem, do not leave anything of value in your car, do not lock your car and keep the windows down.

aloha!

I just found the pictures that we took from Kailua Beach. There was an island off of Kailua that looked like a turtle. The ones we took from Lanakai had the two islands.

I don't recall if you can walk from one beach to the other. We had no problems parking at Kailua. There was a sewage spill there earlier this year. Not sure if it is something that happens alot.

Directions to Kailua Beach and Lanikai Beach: take the Pali Highway from Honolulu towards Kailua. When entering Kailua town, keep going straight on Kailua Road that turns into Kuulei Road. Pass through Kailua town, the police station and the fire station. At the end of Kuulei Road, you will need to turn right onto North Kalaheo Avenue. Continue on North Kalaheo Avenue which turns into Kawailoa Road. You will pass Kailua Beach Park (with parking) on your left. If you continue on Kawailoa Road, bear left around Alala Point into Lanikai. There is no beach park with parking at Lanikai; you must park on the street and walk through beach accesses between homes. Beaches in Hawaii are public lands; no private beaches but you must use public accesses to get to them. Lanikai Beach is narrow but pretty with views of the Mokulua Islands. Kailua Beach is a wide, sand beach that you can walk to the other side of the bay (3 miles; bring sunscreen and water). If the weather is clear, you might want to try watching the sunrise at Kailua Beach, then walking the beach. You can see the Mokulua Islands and other islands from Kailua Beach. Restroom facilities only at Kailua Beach Park; you can buy food and drink at nearby Kalapawai Market or in Kailua town. No foodstand at the park.

Yes, there was a spill into the ocean in January because of the unusually heavy flooding. The beach and ocean has cleaned itself and everything is back to normal.
