lanai snorkeling

Hi guys, need some help. Okay, i've done the Molokini thing, so i'd like to try snorkeling in Lanai this time (even tho most peeps here on the board feel it doesnt compare to anything in Maui). So, would u recommend just the regular boat trip or go ocean rafting there? Should i bother "landing" on the actual island?

Also, please explain the difference between La Perouse Bay, Kanaio Coast, and the Ahihi-Kinau Natl Preserve .. are all 3 pretty much the same area? Should i bother doing the rafting trips? Or drive there myself (with a Dodge Neon rental?) I know, too many ?s .. but HELP!

Caps,
We have done the Lanai snorkel trip thing 5 or 6 times, twice with Trilogoy to "their" beach, twice with Four Winds to just snorkel, and once on a raft.

The Trilogy trip is nice in that you are on a beautiful beach (shared with a five star resort) with lots to do. At the time they were the only operator with "landing" rights. Basically you can lay around on the beach all day long, snorkel, partake in beach activities such as volleyball, hike, take a mini van tour, and finally eat in their hut. They do a first class job taking care of your needs.

The Four Winds type trip (as I remember 3 or 4 other trips pulled up right next to us in the bay) was fun. If you only want snorkeling and more of it, I would consider these.

The first half of the raft trip was fun, we went all the around Lanaii to some sea caves. We did stop several times. The problem is on the way back, incredibly rough seas, wavesthat seemed 30-40 feet (this was in August) and the three kids were incredibly seasick and miserable.

So it depends on what you are looking for. We enjoyed all these trips and will probably do one again.

Hi Bob,

Thanks so much for the info .. i do want to do a lot of snorkeling, and at the same time go for more adventure with the rafting, but I am going in August. Seasickness would be too much of an adventure, so i guess the traditional boat/cat trips would have to do. Thanks again.

Hi Caps,
For another opinion, we did The Dolphin Lanai Snorkel Rafting Adventure with Captain Steve last year in July
http://www.captainsteves.com/tours.html and had a great time-snorkeled at 2 or 3 different places and saw lots of fish, turtles and an octopus. Swam with a group of dolphins. I guess it depends on the day but no big waves and no one on our raft was sick-everyone had a great time. We didn't book ahead-just called once we arrived on Maui(although I do see on his website he is offering a discount for booking online)so maybe you could wait and check out the weather conditions and then decide if you want to go-I wouldn't rule it out!
Have a great time whatever you decide.

I've gone out whale watching & snorkeling with Captain Steve several times. He's great! Also done the Trilogy trip once - it's kind of expensive, but you do get a lot for your money & you do get to "land" on Lanai. Have also done the snorkeling trip with Pacific Whale Foundation.
