LANAI

In lue of the recent comments about Manele Bay I can only say....If you want to go to a very special island, secluded, with lovely people....go to Lanai. If you want to go for a resort destination....go to the Four Seasons, Maui.

Michelle,

The only beauty on the island is the resprt itself. There is little beauty as far as the island goes. If you want to see a beautiful island, go to Kauai--The GArden Island. You won't find a single waterfall or green space on the entire island of Lanai, except for the golf course.

IMHO

Mike

Unfortunately, the "lovely people" don't seem to work at the manele bay.

I am sad to hear that the staff at Manele Bay falls short and I hope this changes.

Mike, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many would find the Grand Canyon boring or the painted desert. We love Kauai for it's beauty...but something beautiful does not need to be green and lush. There is much to behold on this desert island!

Going to Lanai next week. Will let you all know how it stacks up with the other islands. Manele Bay Hotel.

I think Lanai is a fabulous island! You CAN find lushness and greenery if you head up the Munroe Trail(I think that's the name). There are plenty of things to do if you like the outdoors!Stayed at Manele Bay and we loved it.Did not encounter one rude person!we were totally blissed out!Don't expect any shopping or culture. We enjoyed eating dinner sevaral times at the Manele golf restaraunt, just appetisers and an incredible view! Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Just returned from Manele Bay Hotel on Lanai. Island is great if you want seclusion.

I thought I wanted a little more action so took the ferry to Lahania in Maui. BOY! I had not been to Maui since 1990. No one told me they had turned it into the Tshirt capital of the world with a dash of Bourbon Street and Cabo San Lucas downtown. What an amazing disappointment. I feel sorry for the poor people that see Maui for the first time in 2002. They will never know what it used to be in the 70s. Even Whaler's Village looks tired and overrun.

Lanai? Been there, done that. Relax. Swim. Read. Snorkel. Sleep late. Jeep tour on bumpy roads.

The LODGE is truly outstanding and I would return there. MANELE BAY? No need to go back. Been to nicer places.

Thanks for the update Luke. I'll be there next week and will be looking forward to it. We'll be starting off in Maui for a family event and aren't looking forward to those few days either. I've been looking for the perfect Hawaii resort that's nice & quiet =)

Can't agree with you more Duke....we LOVE the Lodge...booked 4 nights with the option to move down......no way that was going to happen!!! Hope you slept at the lodge for part of your trip....it is a very different resort experience. After a few hours each day down at Manele, pooling and snorkling it was wonderful to return upcountry.

Sorry Duke I wrote Luke by accident ; )

Interesting comments, Duke. On an earlier, lengthy posting many months before, concerning the Manele, I emphatically said I would NOT return there for numerous reasons. I, too, also like the Lodge better, but if I'm seeking an upscale lodge-type resort, there's no need to fly that far as I can find places in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, etc. that are just as nice! As per your comment about Lahaina, well, THAT was my impression of the place TWENTY years ago!! It's simply a junky looking, touristy, T-Shirt selling place reminiscent of Key West which I also despised! However, I DO like MOST of Maui just the same!!

If you gotta do Lanai...do the Lodge.

Even the swimming pool at Manele Bay was disappointing. It was strictly plain Jane compared to the ones you see at upscale resorts on the other islands. No special effects or anything. And try to get to the beach from there.

My suggestion would be to skip Lanai and head to another island, maybe Kuaui. Good luck on Lanai for the lady above that is heading there. TAKE A BOOK!
