Lakes - NH
 

Our family; two adults two children are looking to stay around the lakes region of new hampshire. As there are over 100 lakes, can anybody recommend what is the best lake to stay on and we are looking at renting a vacation rental with lake frontage. Any ideas, we don't want somewhere too busy but equally not too quiet. Thanks for your help

We used to go to Wolfeboro. It is a small town.
These were where I had some of my best memories from childhood. The cabins we stayed in are probably very old now and I know they don't have a/c. They were called Piping Rock. I haven't been in about 20 years. Hope you find a great place to stay. If you do, post back. I would be interested in visiting the area again.

A big, beautiful lake just south of Hew Hampshire's White Mountains.

Our favorite town is Wolfeboro.

Wolfboro is reputed to be the oldest resort town in the US.

Squam Lake is where On Golden Pond was filmed.

I love all these references to Wolfeboro! My family vacationed there every year growing up, and my parents have lived there in retirement for the last 10 years. I love it there. I was just there this weekend, visiting them and spending time on "their" lake, Crescent Lake.

Hey Karen and gc: Do you remember Bailey's ice cream, hansel and gretel shop, yum yum shop, fourth of july carnival.
I loved going there as a child. I still keep in touch with a girl from one of the families that vacationed with us.
I learned how to do the hustle on the lawn in front of the lake. We thought we were so cool!!!

Unfortunately I don't share those memories. When I was growing up I split time between my uncles' places on Bow Lake, near Jaffrey, NH and Cape Cod.

My parents had a summer cottage built on Winter Harbor (Wolfeboro) in '58 when I was 4. 'Fishing' at the Hansel and Gretel shop is one of my favorite memories. We took the boat downtown to Black's every Sunday morning to pick up the newspaper. Gingerbread boys and frosted raisin bread at the Yum Yum shop. Awesome. The town (and lake) seem different now though. More touristy. Also, those dam jet skiis and HUGE boats can be found on the lake.

The NH lakes region is a great choice for a family vacation. My family has vacationed up there for many years and keeps a boat docked there all summer. Like many others that have posted messages, I too have wonderfull memories. I would recomend staying in the town of Wolfeboro. It has many rentals available and has a great downtown area.
Recomended places to eat:
Wolfe Trap (the best baked stuffed haddock I have tasted!)
Full Belly Deli (great subs)
Bailey's Bubble (for dessert)

Here's another recommendation for Lake Winnipesaukee. Lots to see and do in the area, especially with kids.

See www.visitnh.org for lodging. Our favorite town on the lake is Wolfeboro, where there are some lovely rentals on the lake. (Avoid Weirs, Weirs Beach.) Note that you should book forthwith - as most rentals are booked up a year ahead (by the same folks year after year).

Be sure to drive the perimeter of the lake and take a cruise on the Mount Washington!
