I lived in Lakeland for over 20 yrs so I guess I know the area well enough. Here's my recommendations.
Reececliff-Located on S Fla Ave. Been in business for over 50 years. Great Daily specials and Pie to die for. Try their Grapefruit with the special dressing as a side dish. Very inexpensive(around $5 to $7) and popular(this may be the place that Kay refers to).
Harrry's-Located downtown across from Munn Park, serves seafood and has early dinner specials, price is comparable to a Red Lobster but food is better.
Picadilly is the only cafeteria in town and has 2 locations. Free standing building on S. Fla ave. and Lakeland Mall location. It is a chain, though the southern style fare is good.
Strollo's located on E. Main is our favorite Italian family restaurant that's been in business for over 40 years.
Great Wall also located on E. Main is our favorite chinese restaurant that has been in business for over 30 yrs. Love the mo-shu pork!
Texas Cattle Company located on Main just east of downtown is our favorite Steak Place with huge steaks, but little else on the menu. Ask for the Daily special 16 oz bone-in Sirloin for $7.99(they won't mention it, got to ask)
For a special treat try the Antiquarian Restaurant located in the Historic area. Reservations are recommended in this small restaurant but it serves 5 star meals that changes daily.
BTW, the Branch Ranch is located about 15 miles west of Lakeland just off of I-4 and the food is southern fare, family style and good.
If you need any other recommendations feel free to email me.
