Lake Winnipesaukee, NH Motels?

Looking for inexpensive motel style lodging in this area. Clean and attractive. Traveling with 2 small children. Prefer heated pool. Near lake but doesn't have to be on the lake. Found Birch Knoll Motel online and in AAA. Has two stars, but not sure how it rates otherwise. Also daytrip ideas from this area no more than one hour from motel would be helpful. Thank you.

Try www.visitnh.gov for lodging. A heated pool will limit your options, though.

Be sure to check the calendar of events.

There's lots to see and do within an hour drive of any town on/near the lake - plenty of ideas on the same website.

Highly recommend an afternoon "cruise" on the Mount Washington (they have a website).

Lots of lakeside cabin courts and housekeeping cottages in this area that are lots of fun. You won't find them in the AAA books but the visitors guide that New Hampshire puts out is extensive and helpful. Order online at the site mentioned above.

Storyland is worth the trip. Very popular with small children. I think the Mt Washington cruise might be a little long for children. Check Squam Lakes Science Center in Holderness for activities. We went on a pontoon type of boat years ago that was interesting. Playing on the beach at the Weirs will delight the children. Bring sand toys. The tram ride up Cannon Mtn should be fun. Also Clark's Trained Bears. See if you can get a copy of "Hiking in the White Mountains with Children". The trails are rated. Go on a picnic! If you take the Sandwich Notch road there are some waterfalls very near the road. Sandwich is NW of Lake Winnipesaukee.

You can do a search on your computer for hotels/motels in the area, by using the yellow pages.

Three areas you might look into are The Weirs, Meredith and Center Harbor.

I know there are a few B&B's and hotels right on and close to the lake. Try the Inn in Meredith, it overlooks the lake.

Have dinner at Harts Turkey Farm, and go to the Annalee Doll Factory. The Flume, Old Man of the Mountain and Indian Head are all fairly close by.

There is also Lake Waukewand, close by as well and a nice beach area there.

Spent most of my summers in the area as a kid and it's a fun time to visit during the warm months. Have a great time.

Lake Winnipesaukee is a big lake, with a lot of diversity along it's shoreline - from the very tranquil and scenic, to the hustle and honkey tonk of Wiers Beach. In general, the further from Weirs you go, the quieter it gets. In all fairness Wiers does have a nice beach, and some attractions the kids would like.
