Lake vacation question for Maniacs

I am trying to recreate a lake vacation from my youth, but I have no idea which lake area in Maine would do the trick. Rangley, Sebago or Belgrade areas? Do you have a favorite? We will try to find a vacation rental. Looking for a typical rustic main cottage/cabin; boating, swimming, loons, campfires, etc. Any of you Maine folks or Maine vacationers have an opinion?

Thanks for the recommendations. They look great!! Do you have any more place that have kitchens??

No kitchens but I would also mention ALDENCAMPS in Belgrade Lakes, Maine...what sets them apart from the rest is exceptional food at mealtime.

In New Hampshire, I can recommend KingBirchMotorLodge (with kitchenettes) as a great place for a family vacation...Mt Major nearby is a great hiking spot with healthy kids. This is a motor inn, however, I don't think they have cabins. The Alton Bay area nearby will bring back your youth! Check out some of the photos at bayside-inn.com

I stayed at Whisperwood in Belgrade Lakes last summer. Food and fishing are great...prices very reasonable. Eagles, loons, kayaks, etc. Have fun and tell Candy hello!

greg - you might take a look at www.mooseheadcottageresort.com
they have kitchens in the cabins, but no central dining room. greenville has a grocery and numerous good places to eat.

If you want a B&B on a quiet secluded lake - try Alamoosook Lodge on the lake by the same name. It is close to the coast also so you could do day excursions to Bar Harbor, Blue Hill and Camden. They only have 6 rooms and a great spot on the lake.

All Maine lakes are perfect settings, but from what you described I would recommend Grand Pond and Long Pond in Belgrade. On Long Pond there is a place to stay with cabins, boats, etc. as you described called Smith's Cottages (?) I may be wrong on that name but search for a website. There are several nice B&Bs up there, too. Fishing is excellent and the Grand Pond Marina on Rt.27 just before you get into Belgrade is good. Enjoy your trip!
