There are plenty of outdoor activities at Lake Tahoe, so if the kids like to be outdoors, there is plenty to do.

One place that comes to mind is Zephyr Cove Resort. There are lake front cabins as well as a campground across the highway from the lake. The cabins are fully furnished and the cabins with kitchens have all the cooking utensils you will need. There is a long sandy beach right at the resort and in August the weather should be great for swimming. There is also a dock where you can rent boats, jet skis, and water toys. The MS Dixie paddlewheeler docks there as well.

Camp Richardson is just west of South Lake Tahoe and I think they have similar accomodations as well as a dock and a beach. I haven't stayed there though so I don't have any 1st hand experience.

Other things to do - hiking is always a popular thing. The hike down to Emerald Bay is a lot of fun and absolutely beautiful. Carson City and Virginia City are close by - there are some museums there. Truckee is a nice old town with some shops - maybe not quite as interesting for the kids though. There are a lot of bike paths that go along the lake, most are paved and there are many places to rent bikes. Driving around the lake and stopping at interesting sites can take up an entire day in and of itself.

When I was a kid we used to go up to the sierras to other lakes with a lot less to do than Lake Tahoe and we always had a good time. It was the highlight of the summer. It was fun to be able to wander around and just hang out by the lake, find other kids who were also on vacation with their families and hang out with them, and just basically relax.
