Lake Tahoe - skiing and views

We want to spend couple of days next week, for a bit of skiing and just enjoying the views. I dislike casinos and would prefer to be as far away from them as possible. Any suggestions on which side of the lake and which properties will work best for us? I would prefer a view of the mountains, and if possible, also of the lake. We tend to like more upscale places but I am also hoping we can find a ski-lodge type place this time. Appreciate any help, as I have only been to Tahoe once briefly and am unfamiliar with the area and the accommodations.

I see you've posted this both under Nevada and California, which kind of answers half your question. All the casinos are in Nevada, not in California, so California is where you'll want to be to avoid them. In other words, you'll want to be on the West side of the lake, not the east.
Maybe someone will have a better answer, but I'm not too familiar with upscale resort properties on the lake EXCEPT those with or very near the casinos. Sqaw Valley has some beautiful places, but you won't get a view of the lake right there.

Does anyone know if the new Ritz Carlton is now open at Northstar? Talk about luxury and beautiful views -- although again, not of the lake. A couple of months ago it looked as if they were doing the final touches on it.

The Nevada side has casinos, California side does not.

The Ritz Carlton is not yet open. We walked around the construction site about a month ago, and yes, it will be spectacular when complete.

Oh, and NP is right, there really are no upscale hotels on the lake with a view of the mountains, and "away" from casinos. The Hyatt Incline Village comes the closest to fitting your criteria, but it is in Nevada and does have a casino. Also, if you're on the lake, your mountain views tend to be more distant (looking across the lake). Your best bet would be a luxury condo at either Northstar (in the village) or Squaw and get your views while you're skiing.

Note that while the west part of the lake is in California, and the east part of the lake is in Nevada, it is "South Lake Tahoe" that has the most casinos. The part that is in Nevada is Stateline, NV, the part that is in California is South Lake Tahoe, CA.

BTW - when more than one state is involved, you don't need to post multiple threads. (There aren't 2 different forums so both threads end up the same place anyway) You can select both California and Nevada when starting your thread.

Sounds like Hyatt at Incline (north shore) might be your best bet. For the view while skiing Heavenly Valley is by far the best.

By the way, the Hyatt really is a beautiful property. I'm not sure what your aversion is to being "close" to a casino, but if you're thinking a casino on the property makes it tacky -- you're way off base there. In fact we've been to the Hyatt and had a couple of wonderful dinners there, and to be honest, I've never even seen the casino -- but I know there is one there. It isn't like Vegas where you have to go through miles of casino every time you want to go somewhere.

I posted on your other thread about the Hyatt in Incline Village. True they have a small casino, but you could stay on property and never have to see it.

If you ski at Heavenly Valley (South Lake Tahoe), you will have fabulous views of the lake as you ski. It's my favorite place for that reason. There is some sort of resort up on Kingsbury Grade at that end of the lake but I cannot remember the name. Those places may have a great view. There is also a hotel right on the beach at South Tahoe (again I can't remember the name of it, but if you can find a web site that shows all the properties on a map, you may be able to find it. Then call them and ask).

elnap is right about the skiing at Heavenly (as others have noted). The "resorts" to which she refers are not really resorts though...I assume the one on Kingbury Grade is The Ridge Tahoe, which is just a condo development, and on the lake, there is nothing either ski-lodgish or particularly "upscale". There are the two Marriott properties in South Lake, which are probably the nicest properties in South Lake -- both are timeshares, one is Marriott Timber Lodge and the other is Marriott Grand Residence. But, neither is on the lake, and both are very close to the Nevada side of South Lake, i.e. the gambling/casino part.

For die-hard skiers, The Ridge is a great place to stay because of the proximity to the lifts at Heavenly but the resort is kind of far away from everything else and doesn't offer amenities that equal some of the others around the lake.

Instead, look at Northstar or the resorts at Squaw Valley for nice places to stay right next to the slopes. These places are not cheap, however.

I would contact Northstar about getting a nice condo in the village,. Ski in ski out, dining at a super great sushi place, Mikuni, coffe at starbucks lunch at Big Wave burrito & wraps.

I love to sit around the ice rink in front of the many gas fire pits and listening to live music. Just reall y a fun place. It's off the lake though. Along 267 between Truckee and the lake.

Also think about Squaw Valley as the village there is nice too. Lots of great ski runs at Squaw.

The village at Northstar is wonderful, and I too love sitting around the rink and people-watching, having a cup of coffee, etc. Alas, no great views from there. (Have the Moody's people opened their new place at Northstar yet?)
