Lake Tahoe in the Summertime
I'm heading to South Lake Tahoe from July 1-8. What are the must-see attractions and what are some unusual things to do? I heard about a restaurant with jacuzzis or something like that. Anyone know? Do they have any 4th of July celebrations? What are the golf courses and restaurants that top your list? I'd appreciate your advice.

It will be crowded!! But Tahoe in the summer is beautiful. If you are looking for golf and restaurants, you'll like it. I'm a camper, so can't tell you about that stuff. However, if you like good views, be sure to take the Squaw Valley tram to the top of the ski area. Awesome ride and views! Also, rafting down the Truckee River is really fun, but not too wild. Hike down to Vikingholm in Emerald Bay, a state historical site See the Donner Party memorial. Be aware that the water in the lake is COLD. Have a great trip!

Vikingholm is well worth the walk -- bring lots of water and wear comfortable shoes and a hat to shield the sun. It's over a mile walk - nice on the way down; OK on the way up... if you're prepared. We will also be there over July 4th -- I'm told there are fireworks at the lake. Locals will know all the details when you get there.

You can rent mountain bikes and take the trail along Lake Tahoe and over to Fallen Leaf, I believe it is called. Walking around that small lake is also nice.
The view from the Charthouse restaurant at sunset is beautiful. It's on a road up above Stateline and you can see the lake, mountains, sun. The food seemed to have gone downhill last time we were there 2 years ago. Totally agree with view from top of Squaw Valley. |
Note that both of us posters are saying SQUAW Valley tram and NOT Heavenly Valley tram. Squaw Valley is where they had the 1960 Olympics. Their tram holds 120 people and is truely an awesome ride. Heavenly Valley in South Lake Tahoe is so-so.

Tahoe is a beautiful place. The best beaches are at the north end, the best nitelife is at the south end. Don't miss the trip over the Kingsbury Grade to the Carson Valley. Less people and the real Wild West. Also, try a hot air balloon ride over the valley at sunrise.
