Lake Tahoe in October
 

I will be traveling to Lake Tahoe in October...what is the weather like? Will there be skiing?

We haven't picked the exact location yet.

We were hoping to potentially Ski and visit casino's etc..

No skiing in Tahoe in Oct. Typically opening day is around Thanksgiving and even then most resorts have to make the snow to open on a limited basis then.

Weather will be variable. Could bee sunny but chillyin the day later in the month. Cold at night.
You can visit casinos any time of year though. Please don't expect them to be like Vegas. Totally different.

I often spend a week or two at Tahoe in late Oct - and you definitely will not be able to ski. If you are lucky it will be sort of Indian Summer-ish during the day and cool to cold at night. Rain is unlikely - but does happen. also snow flurries can happen - but not nearly enough for a snow pack at the ski resorts.

You can hike, take day trips to Truckee/Virginia City/Reno and/or Carson City, take the M S Dixie across the Lake -- but ski - nope . . . . .

Early October is a great visit to Tahoe. Drive around the lake and look at the great scenery. Casinos are not what you go to Tahoe for..try Vegas or even Reno.

Very very lucky. Even Xmas skiing in Tahoe is pretty iffy.

It's pretty rare that there is NO skiing at Thanksgiving. Generally the resorts make enough to at least have some runs open during that weekend even if they promptly close agian after Thanksgiving. When was the last Christmas there was no skiing? I'm not saying good skiing I'm saying no skiing.

The resorts are always open at Christmas, but being open and decent skiing are two entirely different things. I've skiied on mud in Lake Tahoe in December. This year Christmas was very thin cover. Actually, a decent base by Christmas is a rare thing.

So what you mean is that the conditions are iffy not that they would be open is iffy. Skiing starts at Thankisgiving. Until January ski conditions are variable.

Skiing was fine in Dec. 8-12 span this year, and not skimpy snow level either. Plus we hit a storm getting out to Reno with more, on top of it.

This debate when ski season starts is fine - but the OP is going to be there in October. We can all agree - no skiing then, right? . . . . . .

And at Thanksgiving it is often called &quot;Tahoe Cement&quot; by the real traveled ski club members that I know.

It's ALWAYS referred to Sierra cement. The high water content, which gives us the water we need, gives the snow a much heavier/denser surface than snow elsewhere. The water content stays high through the season. Places like Colorado &amp; Utah have fluffy snow that doesn’t fall in the sierra.

I have only been to Tahoe in Feb. and March and have had great skiing then!

We're thinking of visiting in the fall also. For those of you who have been then, is there any fall color? It seems so evergreen to me, and I haven't heard of it being mentioned as a foliage hotspot. (I've also only been in winter)

Hope valley is gorgeous in the fall. There is a little fall color around the lake and the day temps end of sept early oct are fab!

We used to spend a long weekend at Lake Tahoe each October - I really like it that time of year. It is the shoulder season, so things are generally pretty quiet - summer is over, winter hasn't started yet. Nice time to hang out, do some hiking, drive around the lake, and so forth. There aren't as many shows though, so if that is something you are interested in, that could be a negative for that time of year.
